The latest research examines a teenage female mummy from ancient Egypt who died while in the process of giving birth. The analysis results reveal that when the teenager died, she was giving birth to twins. This condition occurred because the head of the first baby got stuck on the way out, causing the death of the mother and both babies.
"A teenager, estimated to be between 14 and 17 years old at the time of death, was first discovered at El Bagawat cemetery in Kharga Oasis, Egypt in 1908. Recent research using computed tomography (CT) scanning was conducted to determine the cause of death. The scanning results revealed the presence of a second fetus in the chest cavity of the woman, indicating a twin pregnancy."
This research also found that the baby trapped between the woman's legs experienced decapitation. Further observation suggests that the baby's head was still left in the mother's pelvis, indicating the possibility of the baby's head being severed during the birth process. This is likely caused by the baby being born in a breech position, making it difficult for the baby's head to pass through the birth canal.

Researchers suspect that embalmers may not have been aware that the woman was carrying twins, which led to their failure to remove them before the mummification process began. When the diaphragm part of the mummy dissolved, the unborn baby may have moved from the womb into the chest cavity.
"In ancient Egypt, the birth of twins was considered undesirable and often anticipated with mantras and spiritual practices. One mantra from a ancient papyrus called the Oracular Amuletic Decree highlights the fear of the birth of twin babies. This mantra emphasizes the need to protect oneself from the birth of Horus, irregular birth, and the delivery of twin children."
