According to Merdeka.com, Prabowo began his political career by running for President from the Golkar Party at the 2004 Golkar Presidential Convention. However, he lost to Wiranto. In 2008, he founded the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra). Not stopping there, Prabowo ran for President again in the 2009 Presidential Election. However, he eventually became the vice presidential candidate for Megawati Soekarnoputri after a tough negotiation process. On that occasion, Megawati Soekarnoputri-Prabowo suffered a crushing defeat against the pair of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono-Boediono.

In 2012, the Gerindra Party nominated Prabowo as a presidential candidate in the 2014 General Election. Later, Prabowo ran again in the 2019 Presidential Election alongside Sandiaga Uno. Unfortunately, they lost to the Jokowi-Ma'aruf Amin ticket. Despite being part of the government, Prabowo has not given up on his determination. In the 2022 National Meeting of the Great Indonesia Movement Party, 34 Gerindra Party Regional Representatives nominated Prabowo as a presidential candidate for the 2024 General Election. This will be Prabowo's third time running for President and his fourth time running for President/Vice President. In the upcoming 2024 Presidential Election, Prabowo will run alongside Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka as his Vice Presidential candidate.
