Dream - Dreams are often referred to as the flowers of sleep, their presence seems almost real. However, dreams are usually related to human psychological phenomena. A person's life conditions can influence their sleeping experiences, giving rise to unique, strange, and even terrifying dreams.

Dreams can also affect a person's psychological condition. Because bad dreams can make someone worried, while good dreams will bring happiness.

Nightmares are certainly not expected, however, the pressures of life and the problems that arise can cause someone to have nightmares. Continuous nightmares will make sleep uncomfortable, as well as the heart and mind unsettled.

"Nightmare Comes from the Devil"

Islam teaches its followers to always pray to Allah SWT. Including when someone experiences a bad dream. In Islam, bad dreams are indicated to come from Satan so we must pray for protection from Allah to be kept away from their temptations.

This is in line with Imam Nawawi's statement in the Book of Al-Adzkar. He quoted a hadith from the Sahih Bukhari and Muslim, stating that good dreams come from Allah SWT, while bad dreams come from Satan.

"Prophet Muhammad SAW advised his followers, that if they have a bad dream, they should spit to the left three times after waking up. This advice from Prophet Muhammad is mentioned in a hadith narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah RA."

Some of us definitely don't want the bad dreams we experience to happen in real life. That's why after waking up from a nightmare, as Muslims, we should recite a prayer. Here is the prayer to recite after a bad dream as taught by the Prophet Muhammad SAW:

هُوَ اللهُ، اللهُ رَبِّي لا شَرِيكَ لَهُ. أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ عَبَادِهِ وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَنْ يَحْضُرُونَ He is Allah, Allah is my Lord, He has no partner. I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger, and from the evil of His servants, and from the whispers of the devils, and that they be present.
Huwallahu, allahu rabbi, la syarika lahu. A'udzu bikalimatillahit-taammati min ghadhabihi wa min syarri 'ibadihi wamin hamazatis-syayatini wa an-yahdhuruni.

اًثَقَاًَ باتلَ بمتاَاكَ الَلاًَ وصَوَلَاًَ مَلاًَاًَ مَلهَاًَ مَكَاًَ مَلاًَاًَ انَحَقَ مَكَاًَ فَلاًَاًَ اَمَقَاًَ اَلاًَاًَ اَكَاًَ اَكَاًَاًَ فَلاًَاًَ فَكَاًَ مَكَاًَاًَ سَاًَ مَنَكًََ فَلاًَاًَ فَكَاًَاًَ
I seek refuge in Allah from the evil that I have seen in my dreams may it happen to me or to someone else, in this world and the hereafter.

Translation: "It means: 'I seek refuge in Allah with something that the angels of Allah and His messengers seek refuge in, from the evil of what I see in my dreams, so that nothing I dislike happens to me in this world and the hereafter.'"
