Dream - Ghibah is clearly prohibited in Islam. Gossiping is often considered a normal activity in daily life. However, talking about other people's flaws or ghibah can bring disaster. Many people are unaware that they are engaging in ghibah. When talking with friends or colleagues, often the mouth becomes uncontrollable to the point of unconsciously discussing the flaws of others. Ghibah or gossip is the act of talking about the faults or flaws of others behind their back, which they would not like if they knew. In Islam, ghibah is considered a major sin and strongly prohibited because it can damage social relationships, cause slander, and pollute someone's heart.

"Prohibition of Gossip"

The prohibition of backbiting is emphasized in the Qur'an, including in Surah Al-Hujurat verse 12: <يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا مِّنَ الظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ الظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا أَيُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن يَأْكُلَ لَحْمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَوَّابٌ رَّحِيمٌ>

Translation: "It means: 'O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.' (Quran 49:12)"

Backbiting according to Hadith

According to the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), ghibah (backbiting) is explained as follows: "Do you know what ghibah is?" The companions answered, "Allah and His Messenger know best." Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "Ghibah is when you mention something about your brother that he dislikes." One of the companions asked, "What if what I say is true about him?" Prophet Muhammad (SAW) answered, "If what you say is true, then you have committed ghibah. And if what you say is not true, then you have committed slander." (Narrated by Muslim)

"Consequences and Impact of Gossip"

1. Destroying Social Harmony: Gossip can ruin relationships between individuals, families, and communities. When people find out that they are being talked about behind their backs, trust and friendship can be destroyed.
2. Causing Slander and Hostility: Often, gossip leads to the spread of false information, which can cause slander and hostility among people.

3. Soiling the Heart Ghibah (backbiting) fills a person's heart with negative assumptions, hatred, and jealousy, which hinder closeness to Allah SWT. 4. Diminishing Rewards Every good deed we do can be reduced or lost due to the sin of backbiting. In the afterlife, our rewards can be given to the person we gossip about as compensation.

Prayer for Forgiveness if Accidentally Gossiping

If a friend of Dream has already gossiped, then realizes that it is a wrong action, then immediately seek forgiveness from Allah SWT through prayer. Make sure to sincerely and sincerely seek forgiveness. God willing, the sin will be erased by Allah SWT. Here is the prayer to recite when gossiping: "Allahummaghfirlanaa wa lahuu." Meaning: "O Allah, forgive us and forgive him (the person being gossiped about)."

The following prayer is quoted from a hadith narrated by Imam Baihaqi in the book Al-Da'awat Al-Kabir by Anas bin Malik. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: "Verily, part of the expiation for backbiting is to pray for forgiveness for the person you backbite by saying: Allohummaghfir lanaa wa lahuu (O Allah, forgive us and him)."
