The genus Calotes has at least 29 species worldwide, but most are mainly distributed in southern and southeastern Asia. Most species in this genus have a limited geographic distribution except for Calotes versicolor, which is mostly found throughout mainland Asia from southeastern Iran in the west to southern China and Indonesia in the east.
"From 2009 to 2022, we conducted a series of field surveys in Southern China and collected a number of complex specimens of Calotes versicolor species, and found that the population we suspected as Calotes versicolor in Southern China and Northern Vietnam is a new species population that has not been described, along with two subspecies."
According to Dr. Yong Huang, a researcher at Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine.
Given the Name Wang
Given the name garden Wang chameleon (Calotes wangi), this new species has a length of less than 9 cm, and one of its distinctive features is its orange-colored tongue.
"Calotes wangi is found in the broad-leaved subtropical forests that are always green and the tropical monsoon forests in southern China and northern Vietnam, mostly in mountainous areas, hills, and plains on the edge of forests, fertile land, shrubland, and even urban green belts,"

Calotes wangi is active from April to October every year, while in tropical areas, its activity can last from March to November or even longer, and it feeds on various types of insects, spiders, and other arthropods. Researchers estimate that this new species is not endangered, but they note that in some areas, its habitat is experiencing fragmentation.
"Besides, its body is used as medicine and its meat is also consumed," they said. "This is why they suggest that local governments strengthen their ecological environmental protection and pay attention to population dynamics."
