Scientists actually say that each elephant has a name to communicate with one another. In a study published on August 23 on the preprint server BioRxiv, researchers found that African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) make specific calls for members of their social group, and the recipients respond in the same way.
Has a Special Call.
The African savanna elephant has become the first non-human animal species observed greeting others without mimicking the recipient's call, similar to the behavior of dolphins and parrots. Although other animals produce "referential calls" to recognize objects as predators or food, these are usually considered innate and do not require social learning.
"In the new study, the team recorded 527 elephant calls in the Samburu ecosystem in northern Kenya and 98 calls in Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya."
The researchers then identified specific rumbling sounds for 119 individuals by distinguishing between female elephant group members and their offspring that were separated from their herd at the time each vocalization was made or approached when the call was performed. Using a computer model, the researchers correctly identified the recipients of 20.3% of the 625 recorded calls.
The call was apparently not intended for the general audience, such as for elephants or younger mothers. Each call has its uniqueness for the recipient.
Sure! Here’s the translation while preserving the HTML tags: "Indeed, calls from different individuals to the same recipient show similarities, although the pattern may be less defined compared to calls between different individuals. Researchers note that this may occur because the sounds produced by elephants contain multiple messages at once, making it difficult for computer models to choose the "name" used in each call."
The researchers also found that elephants responded more strongly to recorded calls that were originally directed at them compared to calls directed at other elephants, thus further supporting their findings.
