B. nikorum is a new species taken from the names of two members of the senior author Edward Brooks' family, both named Nicholas Brooks. The team found B. nichorum at depths between about 1,770 and 1,840 feet (540 to 560 meters) on the underwater slope in Exuma Sound, Bahamas. These specimens were successfully collected during two expeditions, in April 2014 and February 2019, conducted by OceanX and Cape Eleuthera Institute.

"In 2014, they used eel traps with bait to catch deep-sea isopods, flat and segmented crustaceans. In 2019, another expedition was conducted with further research methods using light traps. Unlike traditional bait, these traps are equipped with colorful LED fishing lights, including green lights for depth and programmable white lights to mimic bioluminescence and attract deep-sea creatures."
