Dream - Pursuing education abroad, especially until becoming a graduate with a Master's degree there, is an unparalleled pride. The thought of obtaining a prestigious job that matches the S2 degree earned will surely tempt every graduate.
However, it is different from the London S2 graduate named Galih Sulistyaningra whose career story went viral below. He returned to his homeland not to look for prestigious jobs with high positions. Instead, Galih dedicated himself to becoming a public elementary school teacher.
Galih tells the story of his experience as an elementary school teacher, which others consider unworthy of his S2 degree. Through his Instagram account @galihtyanr, he shows a picture of himself during his time studying in London.
Galih is pursuing a Master's degree in London through a scholarship from LPDP (Education Fund Management Agency) which is assigned by the Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu).
"He also made the most of the scholarship until finally obtaining a Master's degree in the field of education in London."
After graduating, Galih immersed himself in the world of education by becoming a speaker and extracurricular teacher. He often becomes a speaker at seminars and television programs. He also teaches at renowned international schools in Jakarta. Galih has even been promoted as the Head of Teachers in several of these international schools.
However, Galih remembered what was presented during the interview with the LPDP panelists, which is to integrate contextual and meaningful learning in public schools. Finally, Galih's career journey changed direction by applying to become a civil servant (PNS) to become an elementary school teacher. Galih admitted that he has been committed to becoming an educator since long ago. He realizes that in order to achieve his true goals, he must understand educational issues from the grassroots level.
"Actually, if I want to be honest, that wasn't the initial plan. But it turns out that I indeed need to become a public elementary school teacher first in order to understand the context and grassroots problems, and unconsciously influence other friends," he said."
"He never expected that he would finally work in the field as the main actor and the front guard who is responsible for determining the quality of learning. 'Who would have thought that it would be achieved by becoming a public elementary school teacher, not a creator or policy holder or NGO. Life is indeed funny sometimes,' he said."
Galih returned from London in 2019. He immediately took the CPNS test for the position of elementary school teacher. Galih was willing to set aside his S2 degree in order to serve Indonesia. His desire to become an elementary school teacher without the highly esteemed S2 degree was supported by his parents, who turned out to be educators themselves. "I am willing to let go and put aside my S2 diploma, and accept a significantly lower income than what I used to receive," Galih wrote in his post.
Galih realizes that the orientation of applying for a civil servant position when he was still single is far different from when he became a mother. In addition, the different ecosystem has made her experience as a public elementary school teacher for four years not easy. "Especially when idealism often does not align with the ecosystem, coupled with the orientation and ambition I had when I was still single when applying, it is certainly different now that I am a mother to my own child," she said.
Galih then conveyed a message to Indonesian students who graduated from abroad to come back home and truly build the homeland in their own ways. "Congratulations to friends who passed the LPDP substance selection! Don't forget your promise to build the country, in your own best ways. Since I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary School Education, I am going back and becoming an elementary school teacher," he said.
