The condition is caused by the daily increase in knowledge about the universe and galaxies around it. Therefore, each research conveys new discoveries, which makes it difficult to reach conclusions about the extent of the occupied universe.
According to the BBC Science website, there are at least 2 trillion galaxies in the universe that can be observed. Both large and small galaxies, the size of an arm, are present in the universe.
The estimated number of 2 trillion galaxies is still based on the conversion of 3D images from the Hubble space telescope and mathematical models. This model helps astronomers discover approximately 100-200 billion more galaxies than before.
The calculation method applied by astronomers also details the largest planets in the universe. In relation to the number of largest galaxies, the figures and their distribution continue to increase over time.
The largest galaxy in the universe currently may be the supergiant elliptical galaxy ESO 383-76, with a diameter of approximately 1,764,000 light-years and located in the Centaurus constellation, at a distance of about 654 million light-years from Earth. Although this claim states ESO 383-76 as the largest galaxy, further research is still being conducted, and there is a possibility of other unidentified galaxies.
According to NASA in 2016, the number of galaxies is confirmed to continue to increase. In fact, about 90 percent of galaxies in the universe cannot be observed due to their extremely far distance and low brightness.
