The researchers estimate that the fortress dates back to the Bronze Age, between 2250 and 1950 BC. The Khaybar site bears similarities to other walled oases from the Bronze Age that have been documented in this region. Evidence shows that the oases in the Northern Arabian Desert have been inhabited by settled populations since the fourth and third millennia BC. Although the Khaybar oasis appears to be part of a series of walled oases in northwest Arabia, the discovery of this fortress raises questions about its purpose and the characteristics of the society that constructed it.
