Oasis is one of the natural wonders in northwest Saudi Arabia and supports abundant native plant and animal life."
A study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science found that the Khaybar oasis in Saudi Arabia was entirely surrounded by fortifications during the pre-Islamic period. These fortifications were a type of fort typically consisting of a rampart or wall.
The scientists from the French National Scientific Research Center (CNRS) and the Royal Commission for AlUla have revealed that the fortress originally had a length of about 9 miles.
Scientists also estimate that the fortress has a thickness of between 5 and 8 feet and a height of about 16 feet. The extensive fortress covers an area of nearly 1,100 hectares (2,718 acres).
"Mystery of Prehistoric Civilization in Northwestern Arabia."
The researchers estimate that the fortress dates back to the Bronze Age, between 2250 and 1950 BC. The Khaybar site bears similarities to other walled oases from the Bronze Age that have been documented in this region. Evidence shows that the oases in the Northern Arabian Desert have been inhabited by settled populations since the fourth and third millennia BC. Although the Khaybar oasis appears to be part of a series of walled oases in northwest Arabia, the discovery of this fortress raises questions about its purpose and the characteristics of the society that constructed it.
"The purpose is most likely to protect" and designed to restrict agricultural areas and settled populations. Protection is not carried out by the military, but it is passive defense."
According to CNRS researcher Guillaume Charloux, one of the authors of the paper, to Newsweek.
