Dream - Zhang Ziyu, a basketball player from China, became the center of attention after successfully leading her team to victory against the Indonesian U-18 women's team in the opening match of the FIBA U-18 Women's Asia Cup 2024 on Monday, June 24, 2024, in Shenzhen. Not only because of her action of scoring against the opponent's basket, but also because of her height which appears to be significantly taller than other players on the court. Ziyu is known to have a height of around 220 cm or 2.2 meters.
Quoting from the South China Morning Post, the 17-year-old player came off the bench to make his international tournament debut on Monday and scored 19 points in just 13 minutes as his team defeated Indonesia 109-50.
"On Tuesday, Fiba released a video of their performance which later went viral on social media, sparking hundreds of comments from fans around the world. "He will make thousands of dollars in the WNBA," wrote one Twitter user."
In the snippet on social media, it can be seen that Zhang positioned himself under the ring. He was able to catch the ball thrown by his friend with one leap. Then he put it into the ring.
Profile Zhang Ziyu
Zhang was born on May 1, 2007. He was born into a basketball family, his mother and father both play professionally in China. His father is 2.13 meters tall while his mother, named Yu Ying, a former member of the Chinese national women's basketball team, is 1.98 meters tall.
When Zhang sat on the first grade bench (at the age of six to seven years old), his height had already reached 5 feet 2 inches. Then his height jumped to 6 feet 9 inches during the sixth grade, according to the Chinese government media.
"In 2021, he played in the Chinese National U15 Basketball League and went viral on Chinese social media after scoring a total of 42 points to help his team win the title. According to the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) regulations, athletes must be at least 22 years old before they qualify for mandatory military service, which means Zhang is still unable to leave the major leagues."
The debut appearance of Zhang in the international match successfully caught the attention of basketball fans. Considering his young age with brilliant potential.
