Dream - One of the recommended practices for Muslims during Syawal is to fast for six days. Some say that fasting these sunnah days is equal to fasting for the entire year. Is that true? What are the virtues of fasting for six days in Syawal?
In the book Syarah Shahih Muslim, Imam Nawawi explains the meaning of "like fasting for a whole year". He said that the scholars explained that one good deed is counted as 10 good deeds. If someone fasts during the month of Ramadan for a full month, which is 30 days, then they will receive rewards as if they have fasted for 10 months.
"Meanwhile, fasting for 6 days in the month of Shawwal will receive rewards equal to fasting for two months. Therefore, if a Muslim fasts for a full month during Ramadan, and then adds 6 days in the month of Shawwal, it is as if they have fasted for a whole year."
This is as stated by the Prophet Shallallahu alahi wa sallam: رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ Dari Abu Ayyun Al-Anshari radhiyallahu'anhu, ia menceritakan kepadanya bahwa Rasulullah Shallallahu alaihi wa sallam bersabda: “Siapa berpuasa Ramadhan, kemudian ia mengikutinya dengan puasa enam hari di bulan Syawal, maka ia seperti puasa satu tahun penuh.” (HR. Muslim)
While for women who still have outstanding fasts from Ramadan, it is better for them to fulfill the qadha fasts of Ramadan first before continuing with the sunnah fasts of 6 days in the month of Shawwal. This is done because if someone has outstanding fasts from Ramadan, it means that they have not yet completed the 30 days of fasting.
"Actually, we can count having fasted for a year if we have completed 30 days of fasting in Ramadan and 6 days of fasting in the month of Shawwal. However, there is also an opinion that allows combining qadha' fasting in Ramadan with the optional fasting of 6 days in the month of Shawwal."
Although many believe in the recommended act of fasting for 6 days in the month of Shawwal, Imam Malik and Abu Hanifah have different opinions, as they consider it disliked to fast for 6 days in the month of Shawwal. According to Imam Malik, the reason is mentioned in his book titled Al-Muwatta. "I have never seen any scholar observing the fast for 6 days in Shawwal, so they consider it disliked to avoid the misconception that fasting for 6 days in Shawwal is obligatory."
While according to Imam Nawawi, if in the hadith of the Prophet SAW has established a worship, then we are not allowed to leave it because some people or the majority leave it. In this case, Imam Nawawi disagrees with Imam Malik's reason for leaving the fast of 6 days in the month of Shawwal on the grounds that some scholars do not do it. Even though in the hadith of the Prophet SAW there is already clear evidence about the guidance of fasting 6 days of Shawwal.
The reason some people consider fasting for 6 days in Shawwal as makruh is because they are worried that others might think it is obligatory since it is done after fasting in Ramadan. However, Imam Nawawi refutes that view. According to him, besides fasting in Ramadan, there is also fasting on Arafah, fasting on Ashura, and other voluntary fasts that show that only fasting in Ramadan is obligatory, while the others are voluntary.
