Dream - One of the eagerly awaited things during Eid, especially by children, is the distribution of Eid bonuses. The money in this Eid envelope is usually distributed during social visits. The contents vary, ranging from small to large amounts of money. However, sometimes the children's Eid bonuses are actually kept by their parents. Instead of worrying about it getting lost, the parents end up holding onto the money. It is not uncommon for parents to use their children's Eid bonuses according to their own needs. From an Islamic perspective, is it permissible for parents to use their children's Eid bonuses?
The following is the explanation as summarized by Dream through various sources.
"Bagi-bagi THR is part of the Indonesian society's tradition when Eid al-Fitr arrives. In this tradition, especially during Lebaran moment, it shows the act of sharing happiness with others."
In Islam itself, sharing happiness is a very important thing. As explained in a hadith: "The most important deed is to share happiness with a believer, by providing clothing to cover their modesty, giving them food when they are hungry, or fulfilling their needs." (HR At-Thabarani) Through the above hadith, sharing THR (holiday bonus) is also considered as sharing happiness. In addition to that, Islam strongly encourages its followers to give charity.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Giving charity to the poor is worth one charity, and giving charity to relatives is worth two charities, which are the reward of charity and the reward of maintaining family ties." (Narrated by An-Nasai and At-Tirmidhi) Quoted from islam.nu.or.id, through the hadith above, distributing THR (holiday allowance) essentially prioritizes relatives first. Only then can it be given to others. So, by distributing THR, the person who does it will receive three rewards: the reward of sharing happiness, the reward of charity, and the reward of maintaining family ties.
Then, what is the Islamic view on parents who use their children's THR money?
Quoted from nu.or.id, when a child receives a grant or a gift envelope containing money on the day of Eid al-Fitr, then the parents are responsible for maintaining and protecting the money. This is explained in the book Al-Fiqhul Islami wa Adillatuh by Sheikh Wabah Az-Zuhayli as follows: "If a person with 'limitations' has wealth, then a father has the right of guardianship over his child's wealth in the form of maintenance and development based on the agreement of the four madhabs' scholars." So, in general, people are only allowed to use the money for the benefit of the child.
Parents are prohibited from using that money for their own interests or engaging in transactions or pure contracts that harm their children. In addition, parents are also not allowed to donate assets in the form of their children's THR money. Because the donation they make does not benefit the child. Meanwhile, donations can only be made by individuals who have assets and parents only have the right of guardianship. Therefore, the money can only be used for the benefit of the child. For example, for the child's education, buying toys for the child as needed, and other needs.
