"Recently, the secrets of the Ancient City of Houchengzui in China have finally been revealed. Beneath this 4,300-year-old city, archaeologists discovered a hidden corridor located under the ruins of the city. This corridor spans approximately 15 million square feet or about 4.572 kilometers."
It is stated in a release from the Institute of Cultural Relics of the Mongolian Autonomous Region and the Institute of Archaeology at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences that archaeologists began discovering this ancient city in 2005 and only systematically conducted excavations in 2019. The ancient city is located in Qingshuihe County, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, about 482 kilometers west of Beijing.
"In the latest excavation, archaeologists discovered an underground road system consisting of six interconnected tunnels. This system serves as a hidden transportation network. Archaeologists noted that the tunnels are located at depths ranging from 1.5 to 6 meters below the surface. Their width is estimated to be around 1.2 meters, with heights ranging from 0.9 to 1.8 meters."

"Some of these tunnels run through areas beneath the fortress or defensive walls, opening on their external sides. These hidden corridors are intended to strengthen the defense system of the city of Batu Houchengzui."
This city has a complex defense system, including three concentric walls, additional structures along the walls, limited gates, and a moat. Archaeologists believe that the design of the Houchengzui Stone City originates from the importance of military defense culture and its strategic location on the edge of an ancient alliance.
