Xanana came to attend the 43rd ASEAN Summit at the JCC after Timor Leste was accepted in principle to become a member of the Southeast Asian group of countries in 2022.

His arrival was welcomed by Acting Governor of Banten Al Muktabar and Minister's Expert Staff in the Field of Talent Management of the Ministry of Education and Culture Ristek Tatang Musttaqin. When he got out of the car, Xanana Gusmao was adorned with a shawl featuring ondel-ondel images. He was also welcomed with a traditional Betawi dance from the art team.

Initially, Xanana watched the dance carefully while swaying his body and nodding his head. Interestingly, he eventually joined the dance, following the rhythm of the music with great enthusiasm. According to the Setkab website, Jokowi and Xanana held a bilateral meeting at the Istana Merdeka, Jakarta.

In that opportunity, Jokowi discussed the land border settlement and invited the government of Timor Leste to establish an economic zone at the border of both countries. Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Retno Marsudi stated that Jokowi hopes the land border can be resolved by the end of this year. "Both leaders also agreed that economic cooperation, especially in border areas, is important to be enhanced," she added.
Retno mentioned, Xanana appreciates Indonesia's support for Timor Leste in ASEAN membership. It is said that Jokowi also emphasized future support for capacity building in order to accelerate Timor Leste's full membership in ASEAN.
"PM Xanana Gusmao also stated that Indonesia is the center gravity of peace and an effective voice for peace."
