Dream - The shipwreck dubbed the 'Titanic of the Alps' resurfaces after more than 90 years of being submerged. The ship, Säntis by its original name, was sunk to the bottom of Lake Constance on the Swiss-German border in 1933 because it was deemed unfit to sail but too expensive to dispose of.
At a depth of nearly 210 meters, the conditions of darkness and limited oxygen have kept the 48-meter steamship well-preserved, despite being almost a century old. The plan to raise the Titanic of the Alps back to the surface has been approved. The ship is planned to be exhibited and showcased to the public in a museum.
"We want to present to the public what we have here. This is a monument that we have from our predecessors. That is the main goal," said Silvan Paganini, President of Ship Salvage Association, quoted from The Mirror.
The following is the translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "Titanic of the Alps was initially a ferry service that carried passengers around Lake Constance. This ship operated for 40 years and could transport up to 400 passengers at a time. However, after a wrong decision to switch the ship's engine from coal to oil, worsened by the economic decline in the region, its owner reluctantly sank it."
The following is the translation of the text from 'Bahasa' to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "Swiss Lake Constance Shipping Company, which at that time was the owner of the ship, brought Säntis to the middle of the lake and sank it to a depth of 210 m. Säntis was then forgotten. Until decades later, an underwater survey in 2013 discovered the location of the shipwreck."
The ship was then bought by the Ship Salvage Association Romanshorn who immediately planned to bring it back to the surface. Säntis earned the nickname 'Titanic of the Alps' due to several similarities between the two ships.
"The Säntis steamship has a three-cylinder steam engine like the Titanic. Three-cylinder steam engines are very rare, so that is one of their similarities in technical terms," said Paganini."
According to Paganini, both ships also sank in a very similar way. "The stern was lifted into the air with the flag flying high, which is also similar to the Titanic," he explained. Säntis is actually even older than the Titanic, as it was commissioned 20 years before the Titanic sank. However, due to the deep mountain lake conditions, its condition is much better.
The divers found that the original paint of the ship is still clearly visible, even the name of the ship is still visible. However, Säntis is threatened by invasive mussel species and needs to be saved immediately. Quagga mussels were originally introduced species, first discovered in Lake Constance in 2016. Since then, these mussels have spread rapidly and become invasive.
A study in 2022 by the Baden-Württemberg Fishery Research Station found that the clam has now become the dominant species in the lake's bottom community. The concern is that the clam will soon cover Säntis with a thick layer. So far, clams have been found in Säntis' chimney, raising concerns that the time to transport them to the surface may be limited.
Efforts to lift the ship are planned to begin in March of this year. Divers will attach some sort of balloon to the ship before inflating it to pull the ship closer to the surface.
The first lifting will bring Säntis from the seabed to a depth of 12 m before the final ascent takes place in April. After that, Säntis will be renovated at the nearest shipyard in Romanshorn, which was previously renovated in 1898. "The plan is to exhibit the ship in a museum somewhere in Switzerland," said Paganini.
