Flies do indeed vomit or defecate when they land, but it does not happen all the time. Common belief often states that flies tend to vomit every time they land, especially when they land on food. However, it should be noted that this claim is not entirely accurate.
On the contrary, flies only vomit when they have landed on something they want to eat and when the food needs to be softened before it can be consumed.
This is because flies do not have teeth and cannot chew their food. Instead, they have a long and specialized mouth part called a proboscis. This is a long tube-like structure used to suck up food.
However, in order for the fly to be able to suck up food with its proboscis, the food must be soft enough for it to do so. This is where vomiting occurs.
Besides vomiting on their food, flies are also known to frequently defecate when they land. Flies defecate a lot, and the reason is because they have a fast metabolism. In fact, they actually defecate more often when they land than vomit.
Flies tend to defecate on various surfaces, even on the food they consume. This means that areas visited by flies can contain their vomit and feces.
Due to the fact that the food they usually consume is in liquid form, flies are able to quickly pass the food through their digestive system. Therefore, they must also immediately dispose of the waste products, even right after they have just eaten!
