The construction project of this stadium was initiated by the government of Lucas Mangope, who led the Bophuthatswana Bantustan, with design handled by architect Israel Goodovitch and engineer Ben Abraham.

However, when the stadium is inaugurated, it is discovered that the high and peculiar spectator stands actually obstruct the best view of the field, forcing spectators to turn to the side in order to enjoy the game.

Stadium Mmabatho, located approximately 300 km from Johannesburg, near the border of South Africa and Botswana, is the fifth largest stadium in Africa. Despite having a seating capacity of 59,000, this stadium is rarely used due to its perceived impractical design. In the past, this stadium was the home base for Mmabatho Kicks from the Professional Soccer League of Bophuthatswana, which is now inactive. The structure of the Mmabatho stadium is often considered "strange" by many people, but there are also those who consider it a work of art and even compare it to the blooming of tulips.

"Unconventional design and unsatisfying viewing experience are the main reasons why Mmabatho Stadium received criticism during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, both for official matches and as a training venue. Currently, the only activities that still take place in this peculiar stadium are occasional charity matches and neutral field matches between South African football clubs. The overly sharp angles, unusual geometry, and the fact that the spectator stands are too far from the field have led to Mmabatho being considered as an less-than-ideal stadium, especially for the fans."
