Dream - Intramuros is one of the popular tourist destinations in Manila, Philippines. In the past, not just anyone could enter the approximately 64-hectare area surrounded by the fort. Now we can freely enter to enjoy the Spanish colonial heritage in the Philippines. When visiting the Philippines, Dream.co.id, along with the Philippines Familiarization Tour team, had the opportunity to explore the historical corners of Manila. When entering the Intramuros area, we will see many buildings with Spanish colonial architecture dating back to the 16th century when Spain ruled the Philippines. Despite being a tourist attraction, these buildings are still used as government buildings, schools, and for religious activities.
"Naik Delman" translates to "Riding a Horse-drawn Carriage" in English.
When you come to Intramuros, travelers can park their vehicles and explore on foot to better enjoy the beautiful atmosphere of the old city in Manila. However, if you don't want to get tired, travelers can also choose to ride a horse-drawn carriage known as 'kalesa'.
"Alun-Alun"
Kalesa can be found in Plaza Roma. A park called alun-alun Intramuros is located in front of Manila Cathedral Church. In this park, travelers can also relax and enjoy the beauty of Spanish colonial architecture while seeking shelter under the lush trees.
Manila Cathedral
One of the iconic moments when visiting Intramuros is the Manila Cathedral Church. Not only a historical building, this colonial-style church is also still used for religious activities. Like the wedding ceremony that we saw when visiting Intramuros.
"Placio del Gobernador" in English is "Governor's Palace".
Intramuros still has heritage government buildings, one of which is Palacio del Gobernador, which was previously the official residence of the Spanish Governor-General.
Currently, the building is used as the General Election Commission, accommodating the Intramuros Administration and the National Capital Region Development Housing Fund Office.
"Philippine Presidents' Gallery"
We also passed the Philippine Presidents' Gallery or Galeri Presiden FIlipina. An outdoor installation located on Santa Lucia Street, Intramuros. This installation is often used as a photo spot for travelers and features large plaques of presidents in the Philippines.
"Prison Building"
During the journey, we will also see many walls with iron bars fences. It is mentioned that those buildings are former prisons during the Spanish colonial era in Intramuros.
"Educational Building"
There are many buildings used for educational activities, especially at the university level. The campus in Intramuros has buildings with unique architectural style and an impression of being old, thus creating a different atmosphere.
The universities located in Intramuros include Lyceum of The Philippines, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, and others.
"Coffee Shop and Minimarket"
Besides street vendors, travelers can visit coffee shops and minimarkets to buy snacks and beverages. Interestingly, the minimarket is located in a building that also has colonial architectural style.
