Dream - The legendary Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance from Hong Kong will return at this year's Mid-Autumn Festival. The festival will be held for three consecutive nights from September 28th to 30th, 2023. The Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance performance is the most anticipated event in the festival. It will feature over 300 dancers parading a magnificent dragon measuring 67 meters through the streets of Tai Hang district.
Special, this year's event will feature a number of exciting new elements, including a special performance by the latest generation of dragon dancers with giant LED flower plaques forming a dragon head near the entrance for visitors to take photos. The expanded performance arena will accommodate more spectators along Wun Sha Street and Tung Lo Wan Road.
"We are delighted that the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance is back this season after being suspended for four years, and we are excited to welcome local and global visitors to join in this festive celebration," said Cheung Kwok Ho, Almon, Acting Commander in Chief of the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance and resident of Tai Hang in his statement on Friday, September 22, 2023. For the residents of Tai Hang, he continued, this dance is more than just a performance as it is an integral part of their lives."
"I am proud that traditions like this will continue to thrive as we pass on this heritage to the next generation," added Cheung Kwok Ho, Almon.
The background of the history and meaning of this celebration can also be found during the day at the newly opened Tai Hang Fire Dragon Heritage Centre, with the hope of providing interesting insights into this 143-year-old tradition.
The creation of the framework for the dragon artwork that will be displayed requires dedicated time of more than a month of hard work by a skilled and experienced team of craftsmen. It is known that this dragon artwork is made by hand using materials such as pearl straw, rattan, and hemp rope.
Consisting of 32 segments, the dragon's body is adorned with 12,000 burning incense sticks, with a dragon head weighing 50 kilograms. This fiery performance can only be found in Hong Kong, making it a special show.
The following is the translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "Ancestral Fire Guardian Originating over 140 years ago, the Fire Dragon Dance emerged when Tai Hang struggled with its difficulties in facing a disease outbreak among the community of farmers and fishermen. Inspired by a dream, an elder of the village was instructed to create a dragon adorned with burning incense and parade it through the streets to save the village. Since then, this ritual has been performed every year with its distinctive characters and has positioned itself as one of the most important cultural celebrations in Hong Kong. The dance in this ritual is also included in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage)."
To add to the excitement of this celebration, the "Tai Hang Fire Dragon Heritage Centre" has been opened in the Grade 3 Historic Building at 12 School Street. This event is accompanied by a restaurant that serves dishes inspired by the delicious cuisine of the Hakka community, who are the original residents of Tai Hang. "The Tai Hang Fire Dragon Heritage Centre is a form of celebration of the Fire Dragon Dance, aimed at providing interesting insights into the history, traditions, and intangible cultural heritage of the dance itself and Hakka culture," said Vice Chairman Anthea Lo.
Anthea Lo also explained that this place is located in a historical building that was built in the late 1940s, and is a good example of urban revitalization that functions as a link between the historical tradition of fire dragon dance and the local community today.
Besides the Fire Dragon Dance, Hong Kong also offers a series of lively evening events that should not be missed at this year's Mid-Autumn Festival.
