Dream - Former Facebook employee has embezzled money worth US$4 million or around Rp62 billion from the social media giant. Sadly, the money was used to fund his luxurious lifestyle.
The following is the translation of the provided text from 'Bahasa' to 'English' while preserving any HTML tags: Federal prosecutors in Atlanta revealed that the identity of the employee is Barbara Furlow-Smiles, a former global diversity strategist at Facebook who stole money to finance her hedonistic lifestyle in California and Georgia.
"Barbara Furlow-Smiles, led various Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion programs at Facebook from 2017 to mid-2021. The United States Attorney's Office in Atlanta stated that she stole the money through a complex scheme involving fraudulent vendors, fictitious expenses, and cash bribes."
Furlow-Smiles, who is now 38 years old, pleaded guilty in federal court in Atlanta. Prosecutors said that Furlow-Smiles caused Facebook to pay people for goods and services that were never actually provided to the company. Then, he asked those people to pay him a bribe.
"These people include friends, relatives, former internship workers from previous jobs, childcare providers, hairdressers, and tutors at his university," said the US Attorney's Office quoted by CNBC."
In some cases, Furlow-Smiles asked Facebook to pay people who did not bribe him, in one case giving US$10,000 to an artist for a special portrait, and more than US$18,000 to a preschool for tuition fees.
As part of this scheme, Furlow-Smiles connects their PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App accounts to their Facebook credit card and uses those accounts to pay friends, relatives, and other associates for goods and services supposedly provided for Facebook.
"In this case, Meta as the parent company of Facebook provides assistance and cooperation with criminal investigations. 'We are working with law enforcement in cases involving the former manager of this program, and we will continue to do so,' a spokesperson for Meta said in a statement to CNBC."
Furlow-Smiles, who lives in Atlanta, is scheduled to be sentenced on March 19. She is released on bail of US$5,000.
