"Dream - Google agreed to pay a fine of US$5 billion (around Rp77 trillion) to settle a user privacy lawsuit. Each user will receive compensation of Rp77 million. Previously, the plaintiffs accused Google of spying on people using the browser. However, users had set the Incognito mode for Chrome and Private mode in other browsers."
The translation of "Gugatan Pengguna" to English is "User Complaint".
The lawsuit was filed in 2020, with the use of the platform since June 1, 2016.
According to Reuters, the lawsuit states that Google allowed companies to access information that should have been private, such as details about friends, hobbies, favorite foods, shopping habits, and potentially embarrassing things they searched for online.
The translated text is: "The plaintiff also accused that Google's activities generate "a lot of unverifiable information". U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, in Oakland, California, postponed the trial scheduled for February 5, 2024, after lawyers for Google and the plaintiff said they had reached an early settlement."
"In August, Rogers briefly rejected Google's offer to withdraw the lawsuit. He stated that it is an open question whether Google has made a legally binding promise not to collect user data when they browse in private mode. The judge cited Google's privacy policy and other statements from the company that indicate the limitations on the information that can be collected."
The plaintiff's lawyer said that they hope to provide a final settlement agreement to the court on February 24, 2024.
"This solution still needs to be approved by the federal judge with its undisclosed conditions."
"However, Google has not responded to requests for comments on the settlement. A recent Reuters report noted that both parties agreed to a term sheet through mediation."
