"I see that those with rankings above 200 are still very few. I don't need to mention it, because it's very small and the value is still above 100. There are no entries in the top 100 or top 50," said Jokowi during the 25th Annual Meeting of the Indonesian Rectors Forum in Surabaya, Monday, January 15, 2024."

In front of the rectors, Jokowi requested that the rankings of higher education institutions in Indonesia continue to be improved and optimized. "Domestic higher education institutions must be continuously encouraged, must be optimized. The rankings of the best higher education institutions in Indonesia must be continuously improved based on the US World rankings that are available every year," said Jokowi.

According to Jokowi, rectors and leaders of higher education institutions have a big job to improve the ranking of Indonesian campuses in the world. He has noted the complaints conveyed by rectors regarding higher education institutions.

"Earlier, complaints were also conveyed openly about existing issues, and I am happy with such frankness. There are inspections, insufficient budget, and others. But I have already noted them down. We will discuss them directly later."

"He also reminds that higher education institutions have a very strategic role in producing excellent and quality human resources (HR). Moreover, Indonesia will enter a demographic bonus in the next 5 years, where the number of productive-age population will increase. Jokowi wants Indonesian HR not only to master knowledge, but also to be innovative and produce high-quality works."

Jokowi exemplifies higher education in Vietnam where the industrial sector and universities are interconnected. Therefore, he mentioned that higher education plays an important role as a research institution.

"I repeat, colleges also have a noble duty which is to become research institutions because they have a large number of lecturers, researchers, and thousands of students for the development of science and technology, and to innovate in solving the nation's problems," concluded Jokowi.
