According to recruiters, the reason citizens of neighboring country choose to work in Singapore is due to the exchange rate and economic situation in their home country.

According to Channel News Asia, the Malaysian Ringgit has been on a downward trend since 2023 and in February, it fell to its lowest level since the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s. The Ringgit slightly strengthened to 4.778 at 11.04 on April 15, and traded at 3.513 against the Singapore dollar. Malaysia also recorded an inflation rate of 1.8 percent (year on year) in February, up from 1.5 percent for three consecutive months since November last year.

Recruitment agency Nala Employment has observed at least a 50 percent increase in calls to the general hotline from Malaysian citizens looking for jobs. At Cultivar Staffing & Search, internal data shows that job vacancies in the last three months have attracted up to 30 percent more job applicants from Malaysia compared to the same period last year.
