"This man is also believed to hold a master's degree in law from one of the most prestigious universities in the country. The case came to light after police in Shaanxi released video footage at Famen Temple."
"Dream - A graduate of a prestigious law university in China has been arrested for stealing donation money from Buddhist temples in several provinces. The motive is exactly the same as a crime that once occurred in Indonesia. He altered the QR code for donations, redirecting the funds to his own account. Citing the South China Morning Post, the man, whose identity has not been disclosed, confessed to the police that he had stolen more than US$4,200 or around Rp66.9 million from temples in the southwestern provinces of Sichuan and Chongqing, and the northwestern province of Shaanxi."
A clip from the temple's surveillance camera shows the man kneeling in front of the Buddha statue next to the donation box, along with other visitors. He then attached a piece of paper containing his personal QR code on top of the temple code that is on the box. The man then bowed towards the Buddha three times with his hands cupped in a prayer position.
"Before leaving the temple, he put the banknotes into the box, the value of which was unclear. After the police arrested him, he admitted to using the same technique to steal in other provinces. The police said all the money he took was returned."
"This story has gone viral on social media, especially Douyin. Some say that law graduates have violated the law itself. 'The Chinese proverb says that there are gods above us, so we should not do bad things. Now it should be changed to there are surveillance cameras above us,' said an online observer. 'He studies law, but still breaks the law,' said another."
