Dream - Fintech P2P lending service or commonly known as online loans (pinjol) turns out to not only be used for fun. Many Indonesian people use this loan money for household needs and business capital. In a Populix survey conducted on September 15-18, 2023, it was found that 41 percent of 1,017 male and female respondents aged 17-55 admitted to having used Pinjol. Among the respondents who have used Pinjol, 66 percent use Pinjol services less than once a month.
In general, the use of online lending platforms (Pinjol) by Indonesians is mostly used to finance household needs (51 percent). It is followed by business capital (41 percent), as well as purchasing work support equipment (25 percent). The rest mostly use Pinjol services for education funds (23 percent), lifestyle and entertainment (22 percent), as well as health (13 percent).
In terms of loan amount, 65 percent of respondents have online loan installments of less than Rp1 million per month. Generally, the maximum amount of bills that can be held at one time is Rp3 million.
Four online lending applications that are most widely used by Indonesians include Akulaku (46 percent), Kredivo (43 percent), EasyCash (18 percent), and AdaKami (18 percent). Some factors considered by respondents in choosing the online lending application they want to use include the speed of fund disbursement (77 percent) and having permission from OJK (72 percent). Other considerations are easy registration process (52 percent) and having low interest rates (50 percent).
"On the other hand, lately social media has also been buzzing with the experiences of several netizens who have become victims of online loan debt collector terror. From various circulating stories, some victims claimed that they had never taken out a loan but received bills. However, some respondents admitted that their personal numbers were used as emergency contacts by others."
This survey also shows that 36 percent of respondents said they have been emergency contacts for online loan providers. Among them, 48 percent admitted to being close acquaintances with the person who took the loan and have given permission to include their personal number as an emergency contact.
As for 27 percent, they claimed to be close to the borrower but have not asked for the respondent's approval, 9 percent claimed to know the borrower but not closely, another 9 percent claimed to not know the borrower at all, and 8 percent claimed to know but have not communicated with the borrower for a long time. When facing a debt collector, 61 percent of the respondents said that they would contact the borrower and ask them to resolve the issue.
Apart from direct communication, 47 percent of respondents choose to ignore chats and phone calls from debt collectors, while 28 percent block contact from debt collectors who reach out to them. Meanwhile, 24 percent of respondents choose to report to OJK, and 14 percent report the debt collector to the police.
As information, as of June 2023, the total financing of online lending has reached IDR 52.7 billion or grown by 18.86 percent (yoy). From OJK records, it is known that there are 102 legal online lending services licensed by OJK in January 2023. However, amidst the rampant phenomenon of online lending, OJK continues to urge the public to be cautious of illegal online lending that is widespread. This is because, during the period of April-June 2023, the Task Force for Handling Unauthorized Financial Activities revealed that there were 352 illegal applications offering online lending without permission.
