Dream - The case of safety crash test manipulation by Daihatsu has had long-lasting consequences, and now the Ministry of Transport of Japan has revoked the safety certification of several car models. Among the models that have been revoked are the Grand Max owned by Daihatsu, the TownAce owned by Toyota, and the Bongo owned by Mazda Motor. It is worth noting that Daihatsu is a subsidiary of Toyota.
"Production of Daihatsu Stopped"
Production at Daihatsu factories in Japan has also been halted since the end of last month.
The factory is closed after an independent panel that has investigated the company found issues involving 64 models, including nearly two dozen models sold under the Toyota brand. In the next month, Toyota Motor Japan will announce measures to revamp its small car specialist, Daihatsu Motor.
"We respond to this very seriously," said Toyota CEO Koji Sato to journalists quoted from Reuters, Wednesday, January 17, 2024.
Koji Sato said Toyota will consider whether to break the boundaries between its business and Daihatsu as part of this step. He added that Toyota may send engineers to Daihatsu. Other potential steps include changes to Daihatsu's leadership structure.
The investigation launched last month found violations at Daihatsu including issues such as false reports regarding headrest impact tests and speed tests for several models.
It is found that the violation cases mainly occurred after 2014 and for one Daihatsu vehicle that is no longer produced, it has been there since 1989.
