The Director of Corporate Communications and Spokesperson for Saudia Group, Abdullah Al-Shahrani, stated that they are currently preparing to use flying taxis as a new mode of transportation during the hajj season. Al-Shahrani added that Saudia Group has already agreed to a contract to purchase 100 Lilium jets, electric-powered aircraft that take off and land vertically (eVTOL) made in Germany.

"The Lilium electric aircraft is the first aircraft to operate entirely on electric power," said Al-Shahrani, as quoted by Saudi Gazette, Thursday, January 18, 2024. "After completing the necessary arrangements, these aircraft will fly together with the guests of Allah during the Hajj and Umrah seasons," he added."

"Al-Shahrani said that one electric taxi can carry four to six passengers. Taxis are also environmentally friendly because they have low carbon emissions. "(This) makes it one possibility to sustain air travel and shorten flight time, as it can cover a maximum distance of 250 kilometers," he said."

Al-Shahrani stated that this flying taxi is also equipped with a unique cabin that offers several options for seat arrangements. The taxi also has spacious room to meet the needs of elite guests seeking the best travel experience. According to Al-Shahrani, Saudi Airlines will work to support Lilium by providing all necessary regulatory approvals to operate this type of aircraft in the Saudi market.
