"10 Most Amazing Desert Animals, There are Sand Cats to Beautiful White-Furred Moths"

There are many beautiful and unique animals that live in the desert. What animals are there? Let's check out the list of 10 animals below!

The desert is one of the harshest ecosystems in the world, with extreme temperatures and very limited resources. However, behind these challenges, there are various animals that are able to survive and even reproduce well. Adaptation is the key to the survival of desert animals. These animals must find ways to obtain water, regulate body temperature, and protect themselves from predators. To learn more about desert animals, check out the following article!

1. Sand Cat

1. Sand Cat

Like other desert creatures, sand cats in North Africa, Western Asia, Central Asia, and South Asia have evolved to require very little water. These cats obtain most of their moisture from their food, which consists of small mammals such as jerboas, birds, and reptiles. Sand cats have sand-colored fur with black stripes on their legs and a red line that stretches from the corner of their eyes to their cheeks. They are able to withstand hot and cold sand as well as predators in their environment.

2. Kangaroo Mouse Merriam

2. Kangaroo Mouse Merriam

The kangaroo rat gets its name because it has legs like a kangaroo, even though they are not related at all. In addition to its strong legs, this rat can jump across the deserts in the southwest United States and Mexico. The kangaroo rat's tail is longer than its body, measuring about 4 inches. This animal burrows into the sand to find food such as spiny seed pods, ocotillo, and mesquite, and then stores these seeds in its burrow. The kangaroo rat prefers rocky deserts, although it also thrives in clay, sand, and gravel deserts.

3. Udang Kecebong
3. Tadpole Shrimp

This animal is indeed small compared to other desert animals. The fairy shrimp has a length ranging from 0.08 to 3.9 inches. This animal is found all over the world and some live in arroyos, which are dry riverbeds found in the desert. Female shrimp lay their eggs in the muddy bottom of ponds, but if the pond dries up, the eggs will die. If the pond has water, the eggs will hatch and molt several times until they become adults. This process only takes a few days until the fairy shrimp becomes an adult and starts its cycle again.

4. Antelope Rabbit

4. Antelope Rabbit

Rabbit antelope, which is actually a rabbit, lives in the southern Arizona desert and the northwestern region of Mexico. This animal prefers desert scrub areas that shelter grass but can also be found in more remote areas. This animal is a large rabbit with gray sides, a black back, and orange on its chest and neck. This rabbit has a white belly and is about 22 inches long with a 3-inch tail. It can weigh up to 9 pounds and has strong ears. This animal likes cacti and other plant materials, and sometimes the rabbit antelope is seen eating soil to obtain minerals.

5. Saiga
5. Saiga

Antelope is known for its large nose with nostrils that point towards the ground. The placement of its nose helps the animal cool the air entering its nose in the summer and warm it in the winter. Saiga is critically endangered and can be found in Russia, Kazakhstan, with subspecies in western Mongolia. This animal has a length of about 3.25 to 4.5 feet and weighs between 57 and 150 pounds. Its fur will grow whiter and thicker during the winter.

6. Roadrunner or Chapparal Bird

6. Roadrunner or Chapparal Bird

Roadrunner is a type of ground cuckoo bird and is famous for its speed. This bird can run at a speed of 20 miles per hour or even faster, but sometimes it will fly far. This bird has a length of about 2 feet from beak to tail and weighs about 8 to 15 ounces. Its feathers are brown, black, and white. This animal is omnivorous and will eat anything it can, including rattlesnakes, lizards, snails, small birds, and venomous insects like tarantula hawks.

7. Horned Pit Viper

7. Horned Pit Viper

Amazing desert creatures include snakes that move sideways across the sand. Similar to the movement of ocean waves, the snake moves in two waves that crawl from head to tail. This snake has a length between one and two feet, with females being larger than males. This animal is known for the horn above its eyes. The color of its scales blends with the color of the sand, making it difficult to see. Desert snakes prefer rocky areas and can also be found in oases.

8. Yucca Moth

8. Yucca Moth

The yucca moth is a small white moth that helps pollinate the yucca, a plant that grows in the desert. Yucca and its moth depend on each other and cannot survive without one another. Each type of yucca has its own specific yucca moth that pollinates it. The yucca moth is different from other moths because it does not have a long tongue. It has antennae around its mouth that do not help it find food, as the moth does not eat, but they assist the female moth in collecting pollen.

9. Scorpion

9. Scorpion

Kalajengking is a type of arachnid that is related to spiders. Like spiders, this animal has eight legs and is venomous, although its venom is delivered through a stinger on its tail. Mostly found in deserts, kalajengking can be found on every continent except Antarctica. There are about 2,500 species of kalajengking, but only about 25 species have venom strong enough to kill humans. Nevertheless, this creature still falls prey to other animals such as frogs, snakes, birds, lizards, spiders, and centipedes. Some predators are immune to its venom, while others can tear off its stinger before consuming it.

10. Unta Arab
10. Arabian Camel

Camels have long curved necks, long tails, and long enough legs to fold neatly under their bodies when resting, and have brown, cream, or sometimes black colored fur. Camels have humps used to store fat, and use it when food and water are scarce. In cold weather, a camel can survive for seven months without drinking. Camels have small heads and ears, so the hot air that enters their nostrils becomes cool and moist. Their body length ranges from 7.25 to 11 feet and weighs between 990 and 1,210 pounds.
