"Oops, it turns out these 9 animals only eat but do not defecate"

There are several animals that apparently do not defecate like typical animals. How is that possible? Here are the facts.

When talking about the digestive process in living creatures, people generally think of food being digested and waste being expelled as feces. The digestive process in animals usually involves processing food into nutrients that can be absorbed by the body, while the rest is excreted as feces. However, it turns out that there are several animals that have a unique digestive system, so they do not defecate. To find out more, let's take a look at the 9 animals below!

1. Bird

1. Bird

Birds do not defecate like mammals, which have separate channels for urine and feces. However, birds have one channel, called a cloaca, to excrete urine and feces. Another difference is that mammals excrete the end product urea into their feces, but birds convert urea into uric acid, also known as guanine. That is why birds excrete a substance with dark-colored feces surrounded by white urine. However, not all birds urinate and defecate at the same time.

2. Tardigrade or Water Bear

2. Tardigrade or Water Bear

Many tardigrade species only excrete waste when they molt. "Water bears" or "moss piglets" which may seem strange but cute, molt their skin four to twelve times throughout their lifetime. During the molting phase, their mouths are closed and they cannot eat while they excrete the old foregut, hindgut, claws, and cuticle through the buccal opening (mouth). These animals then excrete moss and algae waste that has been digested through their anus.

3. Jellyfish

3. Jellyfish

Jellyfish are more colorful and attractive to look at compared to flatworms, but their excrement is similar. Most animals have two openings, one for the mouth and another for the anus. This is not the case with this unique creature. Instead of digesting something linearly with specialized cells to absorb various nutrients, jellyfish have a "manus". Jellyfish do not vomit or defecate, but instead, they insert food into the same opening to expel waste.

4. Demodex Mites

4. Demodex Mites

The following 'Bahasa' text translated to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "Microscopic mites live in human hair follicles, especially in sebaceous glands and facial hair follicles, in small groups or individually. In individuals with weak immune systems, this condition can cause a condition called demodicosis. Symptoms include itching, sensitive skin, redness, follicle scales, pigmentation, folliculitis, eczema, papules, and macules. These tiny creatures do not have an anus at all because they only live for about 2 weeks. Instead, they have elongated stomachs with large specialized cells to store waste."

5. Flatworm

5. Flatworm

More than half of flatworm species are internal parasites for humans and livestock. Although flatworms have a mouth, pharynx, a number of intestines, and several sensory organs, they do not have an anus, respiratory system, circulatory system, and are not segmented. Without digestive specialization, flatworm food enters the mouth and waste also exits through the same channel.

6. Spons<br>

6. Sponsor

Sponges are ancient and unique creatures that have specialized cells for specific functions but do not have actual organs or tissues. Instead, sponges filter water that they take into their bodies. Sponges release waste, which is carbon, and it becomes food for other organisms. This process has a very interesting advantage, as dissolved organic carbon cannot be consumed by most living organisms. Sponges collect and convert it into edible food sources, and release their new cells to be consumed by other organisms.

7. Kupu-kupu<br>

7. Butterfly

Adult butterflies only drink nectar. When butterflies excrete it, the liquid comes out in the form of fine water sprays from the tip of their abdomen or as liquid waste that comes out of the respiratory system when they fly. Butterflies release this "mist" after their bodies are full of fluid. This fluid cannot be called urine because it almost contains pure water. The consistency of the droplets varies and may be clear or cloudy. Butterflies do not bite or chew because they do not have teeth. They eat with a long tube-shaped straw, allowing butterflies to suck up fluids like nectar, sap, and rotten fruit juice.

8. Dragonfly

8. Dragonfly

Other creatures that do not have a long lifespan are dragonflies because they do not have a digestive system at all. Dragonflies undergo metamorphosis from birth to adulthood, hatching from eggs as nymphs, then merging and experiencing a brief sterile phase as duns or subimagoes, which eventually become colorful adults called spinners. As their life focus is reproduction, dragonflies do not even have mouths. After mating, the males will fly until they die, and the females that lay eggs will die from exhaustion.

9. Silkworm

9. Silkworm

The silk worm leaves its longer adult stage for reproduction. After the female silk worm lays eggs, the silk worm hatches as a larva. This larva then feeds on mulberry leaves until it reaches the pupal stage, when they spin a cocoon around themselves. But before doing so, they create a giant waste to avoid waste inside the cocoon. After about two weeks, the larva emerges as an adult worm. Because they do not have a mouth, they only live for a few weeks, with a total lifespan of 6 to 8 weeks.
