"Beware, Lack of Sleep Can Cause Diabetes"
A recent study revealed that lack of sleep can increase the likelihood of someone developing type 2 diabetes.
A recent study revealed that lack of sleep can increase the likelihood of someone developing type 2 diabetes.
"The latest study suggests that sleeping less than six hours can increase the probability of certain diseases. A research published in JAMA Network Open adds evidence supporting the importance of obtaining enough sleep to prevent the risk of type 2 diabetes. Information regarding the link between lack of sleep and the risk of type 2 diabetes in this article is sourced from health.com (26/03)."
Diabetes type 2 is a chronic condition that occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or does not effectively utilize it. Insulin functions to transport glucose from the blood into the cells of the body to be converted into energy. Insufficient insulin can cause an increase in blood glucose levels, which can ultimately induce type 2 diabetes.
"Previous research findings, including cohort and experimental studies, have shown that repeated short sleep habits are associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes," stated Diana Aline Nôga, PhD, a neurology expert from Uppsala University in Sweden, in an interview with Health."
The research also notes that there is still a correlation between lack of sleep and type 2 diabetes. The awareness of the importance of rest often does not reach the expected level, but the view has changed with the progress of recent research, according to Jing Wang, MD, who serves as the clinical director at the Mount Sinai Integrative Sleep Center and also as a professor in the field of pulmonary medicine and sleep medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai. "In my opinion, the public and scientific awareness of the importance of rest has significantly increased in recent years," said Jiang Wang, MD.
This information was obtained from a data source of 247,000 individuals collected between 2006 and 2010 from the UK Biobank, a large biomedical data bank. The team grouped participants into several categories based on the number of hours they sleep per day, namely seven to eight hours, six hours, five hours, or three to four hours.
Researchers also assessed participants' eating patterns and provided ratings on a scale from zero (very unhealthy) to five (very healthy). They monitored participants for an average of 12.5 years to investigate the relationship between poor sleep, eating patterns, and type 2 diabetes. The research team did not find a connection between a healthy diet and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes in participants who slept less than six hours per day. Experts state that this study underscores the importance of maintaining health not only through diet and physical activity.
"Although several studies have linked lack of sleep to type 2 diabetes, Nôga explains that there is no adequate evidence to confirm that lack of sleep directly causes the condition. He emphasizes that making such direct claims is a challenge, given the limitations of the available research at present."
The issue related to sleep quality is not only associated with type 2 diabetes, but also with several other conditions.
According to Foldvary-Schaefer, lack of sleep quality can disrupt bodily functions during the day, which in turn can result in decreased academic performance, workplace conflicts, and even mistakes. It turns out, only about 1 to 2% of the population genetically requires shorter sleep duration. Adults are typically expected to sleep seven to nine hours each day, although this amount can vary depending on the specific situations faced by each individual.
Not all carbohydrates are bad, there are also ones that are very beneficial for the body when consumed regularly.
