Controversy over Gender-Neutral Toilets at an International School in Jakarta, DKI Education Agency Conducts Investigation

Dream - The Jakarta DKI Education Agency is currently investigating gender-neutral toilets at international schools. This suspicion arose from Daniel Mananta's statement regarding the discovery of gender-neutral toilets.

Acting Head of the Jakarta DKI Education Agency, Purwosusilo, stated that they are currently investigating the truth of the existence of gender-neutral toilets recently viralized at international schools in Jakarta.

"Yes, we are checking through our supervisors. Our section chief has communicated with us. It means that we also need time because we need coordination with various parties if it concerns international schools," said Purwosusilo, quoted from Liputan6.com, Wednesday, August 9, 2023.

Gender-neutral refers to someone who personally does not identify themselves as male or female. Therefore, it includes individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT).

Purwosusilo explained that international schools fall under the authority of the central government through the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia.

The Jakarta Provincial Government through the DKI Education Agency is conducting an investigation due to the viral presence of gender-neutral toilets at international schools located in the DKI Jakarta area.

"Therefore, we are currently exploring this matter. As a requirement, we are asking the school principals in each school unit for their cooperation to see if there is any connection to the gender-neutral toilets that were mentioned," explained Purwosusilo.

According to him, the education agency is also checking public and private educational units in the DKI Jakarta area for further action. The result is that no gender-neutral toilets were found in these schools.

"Currently, we prioritize schools in educational units in DKI Jakarta, from kindergarten to high school. We did not find any gender-neutral toilets. This means that it is clear that in all educational units in DKI Jakarta, our investigation found only two toilets: one for males and one for females," he said.

Previously, in a podcast with Quraish Shihab, Daniel Mananta discussed, among other things, LGBT issues and mentioned the gender-neutral toilets.

According to Daniel, when he took his child to visit an international school in the Jabodetabek area, he was surprised to find three types of toilets: one for females, one for males, and one gender-neutral toilet.

"When I was at that school, I went to the receptionist, and there were toilets for males, females, and gender-neutral. They said it was a gender-neutral toilet," Daniel revealed in his podcast on YouTube on July 4, 2023.
