As a result, the British forces were angered and issued an ultimatum on November 10, 1945, demanding that Indonesia surrender their weapons and cease resistance against the AFNEI army and the NICA administration. They threatened to attack the city of Surabaya by land, sea, and air if the Indonesian people did not obey the British orders.

Not only that, under the orders of Major General Eric Carden Robert Mansergh, the British forces issued an instruction stating that all Indonesian leaders and youths in Surabaya must come to the designated place no later than November 10, 1945, at 06:00 in the morning.

The Indonesian people did not accept this instruction. Because the British forces and their allies were just newcomers who should leave Indonesian soil. The ultimatum was not obeyed by the people of Surabaya. As a result, there was a fierce battle between the Indonesian people and the British forces. This battle lasted for approximately three weeks, starting from November 10.

Surabaya was like hell for the Indonesian people. Battles occurred everywhere and caused great losses, both in terms of property and lives.

Approximately 20 thousand Indonesian people who participated in the battle of Surabaya became victims. Most of them were civilians. Not only that, it is estimated that 150,000 people were forced to leave the city of Surabaya in search of a safe place.

On the enemy side, around 1,600 British soldiers were killed, missing, or injured, and dozens of weapons were damaged and destroyed.

Many of our fighters died on the battlefield defending Indonesian independence. That is why November 10 is commemorated as National Heroes' Day.
