The Length of Time the Quran Was Revealed

Currently, Muslims read the Quran in the form of a book. Where each surah and its verses are arranged in order and neatly. So it is easier and more comfortable to read. However, it should be known that the revelation of the Quran was not directly in the form of a book. But it was fragmented and revealed gradually.

In the book entitled History of the Quran by Ahmad Sarwat, Lc., MA., it is explained that the Quran was revealed in several periods.

The first period, the Quran was revealed all at once from Lauhul Mahfuzh in the seventh heaven to Baitul Izzah in the earthly sky on the Night of Power (Lailatul Qadar).

The second period, the Quran was revealed from the earthly sky to the surface of the earth gradually. This is explained in the words of Allah SWT in Surah Al-Qadr verse 1, which means:

"Indeed, We revealed it (the Quran) on the Night of Power." (QS. Al-Qadr: 1)

First

The condition of the Arab society at the time of the revelation of the Quran did not know how to read and write, or called 'ummi'. Even Prophet Muhammad could not read and write. Because he could not read and write, the Quran was not revealed all at once, as the Prophet could rely on memorization.

That is why the Quran was not revealed all at once, because the Prophet could not read and write. If it was revealed gradually, it would be easier for the Prophet to memorize it.

Second

The verses in the Quran were revealed through dialogue. Commenting on the conditions and natural events that occurred. It is even explained in the Quran that the Quran was revealed gradually through Surah Al-Isra verse 106:

وَقُرْاٰنًا فَرَقْنٰهُ لِتَقْرَاَهٗ عَلَى النَّاسِ عَلٰى مُكْثٍ وَّنَزَّلْنٰهُ تَنْزِيْلًا

Meaning: "And We have revealed the Qur'an to you (O Muhammad) in stages so that you may recite it to the people gradually and We have revealed it in stages." (QS.Al-Isra: 106)

Surah Al-Maidah Verse 48

وَاَنْزَلْنَآ اِلَيْكَ الْكِتٰبَ بِالْحَقِّ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِنَ الْكِتٰبِ وَمُهَيْمِنًا عَلَيْهِ فَاحْكُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ بِمَآ اَنْزَلَ اللّٰهُ وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ اَهْوَاۤءَهُمْ عَمَّا جَاۤءَكَ مِنَ الْحَقِّۗ لِكُلٍّ جَعَلْنَا مِنْكُمْ شِرْعَةً وَّمِنْهَاجًا ۗوَلَوْ شَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ لَجَعَلَكُمْ فِيْ مَآ اٰتٰىكُمْ فَاسْتَبِقُوا الْخَيْرٰتِۗ اِلَى اللّٰهِ مَرْجِعُكُمْ جَمِيْعًا فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ فِيْهِ تَخْتَلِفُوْنَۙ

Meaning: "And those who disbelieve say, ‘Why was the Qur'an not revealed to him all at once?’ Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly." (QS.Al-Furqan: 32)
