In the surah Al Ghasyiyah, it is explained about the condemnation of those who refuse to learn from the verses of Allah SWT that have been revealed to the earth and the expanse of the sky.

Surah Al Ghasyiyah, as mentioned by Imam An Nawawi in Majmu’ Syarhul Muhadzdzab, was recited by the Prophet Muhammad SAW during the Eid prayer, in addition to surah Al A'la.

Surah Al Ghasyiyah is addressed to the followers of the Prophet Muhammad SAW regarding the news of the coming of the Day of Judgment and its tremendous events.

When the Day of Judgment comes, many faces of people who have been disobedient will be humiliated and ashamed because their wickedness is exposed and they fear the punishment of the hellfire.

These people will try hard to avoid the punishment, but their efforts will be in vain. So they are forced to accept the punishment because in the world they refused to follow the commandments of Allah SWT.

Surah Al Ghasyiyah also explains that those who disobey Allah SWT will be thrown into a very hot hellfire. When they are thirsty, they will be given boiling water to drink.

When they are hungry, they will beg for food. But all they will get is thorny trees that even animals refuse to eat.

Virtues of Reciting Surah Al Ghasyiyah

Surah Al A'la and Surah Al Ghasyiyah are two surahs that were often recited by Prophet Muhammad SAW when leading the Friday prayers and the prayers of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

This indicates their virtues because these two surahs mention the creation of mankind, the occurrence of the Day of Judgment, the conditions that will happen on the Day of Judgment, and all of this takes place on Friday.

During the pre-dawn Friday prayer, it is recommended to recite Surah As Sajadah and Al Insan. These two surahs also mention the creation of mankind and the Day of Judgment, so this is the meaning or wisdom behind them being prescribed and recommended to be recited so that we remember that day (the Day of Judgment).

The asbabun nuzul of Surah Al Ghasyiyah can be seen from Imam Ibn Jarir and Imam Ibn Abu Hatim, who have presented a hadith through the narration of Qatadah.

Qatadah narrated that when Allah described the pleasures of Paradise, the misguided people were amazed to the point of shaking their heads, not realizing how amazing Paradise is. Then Allah revealed His verses (Surah Al Ghasyiyah, which contains a description of the pleasures of Paradise).
