Breast Milk Trend Transformed into Powder to Extend Shelf Life, Ministry of Health Warns about Component Changes

Dream - Since the beginning of May 2024, there has been a lot of talk about the Breast Milk (ASI) service being transformed into powder through a specific process. In a viral video on social media, a mother demonstrates how to turn ASI into powder using the freeze-drying method or freeze-drying.

Breast Milk Trend Transformed into Powder to Extend Shelf Life, Ministry of Health Warns about Component Changes

This method converts breast milk into a dry powder form with the intention of making it more durable and easier to store. In relation to this matter, the Ministry of Health finally spoke up. It turns out that the drying process can cause changes in the important components of breast milk.

"This breast milk is dried through the process of freezing and drying. These series of physical changes can increase the risk of changes in the main components of breast milk, such as the breaking of fat globule membrane and changes in casein micelle, as well as a decrease in the composition of bioactive protein factors."

The text translates to: "The words of the Director of Maternal and Child Nutrition and Health (KIA) of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Lovely Daisy, were quoted from Liputan6.com."

It is Better to Give Breast milk Directly

Dr. Daisy emphasizes that the best method to provide breast milk is through direct breastfeeding, also known as direct breastfeeding (DBF). "Mothers are expected to breastfeed their babies directly because this can build an emotional bond between mother and baby," says Daisy.

Breast milk is the best food for babies

Dr. Daisy has strong reasons to recommend exclusive breastfeeding as the best food for babies during the first six months of their lives. Breastfeeding has many benefits for both mother and baby, such as boosting the baby's immune system, protecting the baby's digestive system, and enhancing intelligence.

"Furthermore, breastfeeding can reduce the risk of degenerative diseases in infants. For mothers, breastfeeding can lower the risk of ovarian and breast cancer. Therefore, breastfeeding is not just about providing breast milk to the baby."

word from Dr. Daisy.

"Expressed Breast Milk, an Alternative for Working Mothers"

"For mothers who are unable to breastfeed directly, for example due to work, breastfeeding can be done using expressed breast milk (EBM). Expressed breast milk is breast milk that is pumped and then stored to be given to the baby as needed. "If the mother is unable to breastfeed the baby directly, expressed breast milk can be an alternative. The recommended expressed breast milk is fresh breast milk that is pumped on the same day or the day before, as its nutritional content is still optimal," said Dr. Daisy."

"Guidelines for Storing Expressed Breast Milk"

According to the pocket book "Feeding Infants and Children (PMBA) for Cadres" published by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia in 2021, here is a guide to storing expressed breast milk: Freshly expressed and stored breast milk in a cooler bag: Can be stored for up to 24 hours. Expressed breast milk at room temperature (fresh EBM): Can be stored for up to 4 hours at a temperature of 27-32 degrees Celsius, and up to 6-8 hours at a temperature below 25 degrees Celsius.

Breast milk that is stored in a refrigerator (temperature less than 4 degrees Celsius): Can be kept for up to 2-3 days. Breast milk that is stored in a single-door refrigerator freezer (temperature -15 to 0 degrees Celsius): Can be kept for up to 2 weeks. Breast milk that is stored in a double-door refrigerator freezer (temperature -20 to -18 degrees Celsius): Can be kept for up to 3-6 months. With this storage guide, it is expected that mothers who are unable to breastfeed directly can still provide breast milk for their beloved baby for up to 2 years. Source: Liputan6.com
