In the Instagram story shared a few days ago, the owner of the Rhode brand showed their very unusual snack. They always want to eat egg salad mixed with pickles and spicy sauce.

Pregnant women like Hailey often crave unusual foods. Pregnancy sometimes makes mothers want to do something very strange. In Indonesia, we often refer to it as "ngidam". Some people like to chew ice cubes, always want pickles and fruit salad, or maybe other foods that must be bought in the middle of the night by their beloved husband. Curious why this happens?

"Although there may be certain cravings, such as pickles, bananas, and tomato sauce, these foods represent some aspects of the usual snacking cravings during pregnancy," said Dr. Tiffany Pham, obstetrician and gynecologist specialist.

According to Dr. Pham, pregnant women usually always look for five food groups such as candy, carbohydrates, animal protein, fruits, and milk. These cravings can occur at any time and can even change every trimester.

Meanwhile, Dr. Cheruba Prabakar, an obstetric and gynecology specialist at Sutter Health, revealed that these symptoms tend to start in the late first trimester. In some pregnant mothers, these symptoms can start as early as five weeks gestation and increase in the second trimester.

Prabakar explained that there are several theories that reveal significant physiological changes that occur in the body during pregnancy. The presence of specific cravings for food or drinks could be a sign that the pregnant body needs certain nutrients.

"Sense of taste can undergo changes along with the increasing levels of pregnancy hormones. Some mothers crave nutrients that are lacking in their bodies. Mothers with low iron levels may crave red meat, for example,"

 word from Dr. Prabakar.

Research shows that this symptom will decrease in the third trimester and tend to disappear after the baby is born. According to Dr. Pham, the cause of cravings is not only due to the mother's lack of certain nutrients but also because of the increased need for nutritious food and hormonal changes. "Every person's pregnancy journey is unique, and hormones can affect each person in different ways," he said. Source: YahooLife
