Dream - Some children, especially those who are still toddlers or under five years old, find it very difficult to eat. There are some who close their mouths immediately upon seeing food or often referred to as the mouth-closing movement (GTM), some who spit out the food, and some who vomit immediately while eating.
That is certainly very worrying, especially if it happens repeatedly. Moreover, it can even cause the child's weight to not increase or decrease drastically.
"If all the menus and efforts to ensure that the little one can eat comfortably and normally do not yield results, it may need feeding therapy. According to Dr. Citra Amelinda, a pediatric specialist, feeding therapy is a therapy aimed at reducing a child's stress during mealtime. 'Eating skills and a child's self-confidence are restored. The child can consume nutritious and complete food, and there is adequate weight gain,' she said."
To get the right therapy, parents can first consult with a pediatrician. Later, the doctor will conduct an initial examination and recommend therapy that is suitable for the child.
There are several tendencies that children with eating problems have, and it could be a sign that they need therapy. According to Dr. Citra, it is important for parents to pay attention to their child's eating habits.
The following are some signs that a child needs feeding therapy: - Refusing to eat at all and only wanting to drink milk - Difficulty chewing/swallowing food - Rejecting food with certain types and/or textures - Frequently coughing, choking, or vomiting during mealtime - Crying, bending over, or throwing tantrums every time they see food
"To encourage children to eat and be interested in trying out food, there are several things usually done in therapy. In terms of oral aspect, training the child to control and coordinate the movements of chewing, sucking, and swallowing food or drinks."
Then there is also food orientation therapy, which encourages children to enjoy food more. One way is by stimulating the sensory system. Therapy will focus on reading the child's signals to make them more interested in looking at food.
"The process of a child's success can vary, so there is no specific time when a child stops feeding therapy," said Dr. Citra. Source: IG @citra_amelinda"
