Dream - Eye health problems are not only experienced by adults. Children, including those under five years old (toddlers), also experience them.
"In the stages of growth and development, the condition of a child's eyes indeed changes and continues to develop. Changes can occur in the shape of the eyes, the length of the eyeball, and the focus of the eyes."
This can cause vision problems such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or astigmatism. There are many factors that can trigger vision problems in children. It can be due to genetics, accidents, and the most common is excessive use of gadgets, such as smartphones and computer screens.
According to Dr. Kevin, an eye specialist from KMN EyeCare, it is important for parents to pay attention to possible symptoms. Some habits of children can be a sign of eye problems in children. Here are five signs that may appear and should be watched out for.
1. Difficulty Reading
One of the most common signs is difficulty in reading. If a child often furrows their brow or holds the book too close, it could be a sign that the child's eyes have a problem.
If a child continues to complain about having problems while reading, especially when in class, it could be a sign of nearsightedness. Get it checked immediately. 2. Frequent Blinking If you notice your child frequently blinking or rubbing their eyes, it could also indicate discomfort or irritation in the eyes.
3. Often Complaining of Headaches
Children who often experience headaches, especially in the forehead or behind the eyes, may have vision problems. The eyes working hard to focus can trigger headaches.
4. Closing One Eye If a child tends to close one eye when looking at something, this could be a sign that one eye is working better than the other. This can indicate a difference in vision between the two eyes. 5. Difficulty Seeing Far/Near If a child has difficulty seeing objects that are far or near, this could be a sign that they have a vision problem that needs to be examined.
The appropriate time to conduct an examination
To ensure that eye problems in children are detected and addressed early on, it is crucial to regularly conduct eye examinations for children. This is especially important for children aged 3 to 5 years, or children who are ready to start school, as eye examinations are mandatory.
Next, from the age of 5 to 17 years old, have your child's eyes checked at least once a year. Why is that? "During this age range, children tend to experience refractive changes in their eyes more quickly, so early detection is necessary. If there is a family history of vision problems, such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, children have a higher risk of experiencing similar problems. In this case, it is advisable to have children's eyes examined earlier," message from Dr. Kevin.
"For children's eye examinations, it is better to be done by a specialist pediatric ophthalmologist. One of the eye clinics that provides pediatric ophthalmology services is KMN EyeCare, which has branches in Jakarta and Semarang."
