Dream - Islam teaches about how important it is to be dutiful to our parents. Considering that both parents have taken care of, nurtured, guided, and shown their love to their child since conception until adulthood. Therefore, it is our obligation to respect and be dutiful to them. One form of our devotion to our parents is by always praying for them. Those prayers will become a protection for our parents. In fact, prayers for parents have been taught to children from an early age.
Besides that, Dream's friends can also practice the prayer of Prophet Ibrahim for both parents in everyday life. Insha Allah, both of our parents will always be under His protection and their sins will be forgiven.
The following is a reading of the prayer of Prophet Ibrahim for both parents as summarized by Dream through various sources.
The following is a prayer reading for both parents that friends of Dream can practice in daily life:
"رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ" (QS. إبراهيم: 41) Translation: "Our Lord, forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day the account is established." (Quran 14:41) Through the above prayer, according to Tahlil interpretation, Prophet Ibrahim's prayer is to ask Allah SWT to forgive all the mistakes of his parents and the mistakes of the believers on the day Allah SWT gathers them to account for their deeds during their lifetime.
As known through the story of Prophet Ibrahim (as), his father was an unbeliever. While his mother was someone who believed in Allah SWT. Prophet Ibrahim once promised to seek forgiveness for his father. However, it turned out that his father remained in his disbelief.
Serving one's parents is one of the main teachings in Islam that is emphasized in many verses of the Quran and hadith. Here are several ways to serve one's parents according to Islam:
Allah SWT commands Muslims to obey their parents as long as their orders do not contradict Islamic teachings. This is mentioned in the Qur'an: "And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination." (Quran, Luqman: 14)
Speaking softly, behaving politely, and not hurting their feelings is a true form of respect for parents. "And your Lord has commanded that you shall not worship anyone but Him, and that you shall be good to your parents. If one or both of them reach old age with you, do not say 'ah' to them, nor scold them, but speak to them with kindness and respect." (Quran, Al-Isra: 23)
Praying for the goodness of both parents, whether they are still alive or have passed away, is one of the highly recommended forms of devotion. "O my Lord, have mercy on both of them, as they both have raised me since I was young." (QS. Al-Isra: 24)
"Helping with their work, taking care of them when they're sick, and fulfilling their needs are practical ways to show gratitude to our parents. The Prophet Muhammad said: 'Allah's pleasure depends on the pleasure of the parents, and Allah's anger depends on the anger of the parents.' (Hadith Tirmidhi)"
If parents need financial support, children are obligated to help them according to their ability. In the hadith it is mentioned: "You and your wealth belong to your father." (HR. Ibnu Majah)
Visiting parents regularly, maintaining communication, and fostering good relationships are important ways to show devotion to them. In a hadith, the Prophet Muhammad said, "Whoever wants their life to be prolonged and their sustenance to be increased, then they should maintain ties of kinship." (HR. Bukhari)
Fulfilling the promises and wills of parents after their death is also a form of devotion. Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Verily, fulfilling the promises of parents after their death is part of being dutiful to them." (Narrated by Abu Dawud)
By executing these commands, a Muslim can show respect and devotion to their parents according to the teachings of Islam.
