Dream - Several regions in Indonesia are currently in the rainy season. It rains heavily every day. With low air temperature and high humidity, it makes it very easy for viruses and bacteria to multiply.
Children, especially those under the age of five (toddlers), with an immature immune system are very susceptible to and can easily contract diseases during the rainy season.
One of the diseases that often occurs in children during the rainy season is Acute Respiratory Tract Infection (ISPA). ISPA, according to Dr. Frieda Handayani, a pediatric specialist, is included in one of the most dangerous disease categories for children.
"ISPA is a respiratory infection caused by a virus that attacks the nose, trachea, and even the lungs. One of the most common types of ISPA is the flu. There is also sinusitis, pharyngitis, epiglottitis, and tracheobronchitis," said Dr. Frieda.
The symptoms that appear when a child is affected by ISPA include sneezing, stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, headache, and muscle pain.
By experiencing this, it certainly makes children very fussy and often lose their appetite. If not immediately addressed, ISPA can disrupt the respiratory system, as the body does not receive enough oxygen. If ISPA symptoms appear in the little one for 3 days, accompanied by high fever that does not go down, do not delay to immediately consult a doctor.
There are several important steps to prevent children from getting respiratory tract infections (ISPA) during the rainy season. The first thing to consider is the cleanliness aspect in the home environment. "Respiratory tract infections are influenced by the environmental conditions, the condition of the house/living area, and the place where children play, so it is very important for us to maintain cleanliness," said Dr. Frieda.
Secondly, always encourage children to wash their hands with soap, make sure that eating/drinking utensils for children are always clean when used. Often, this simple thing is underestimated, even though it is very important to prevent children from getting respiratory infections.
Third, make sure that your child's daily nutritional intake is well fulfilled. This is because it will greatly affect their immune system. "Maintain a healthy diet, encourage your child to consume balanced nutritious food and drinks, and regulate their sleep pattern," said Doctor Frieda. Source: IG @frieda.handayani
