Dream - Natural conditions and environment that are heavily exposed to waste and pollution are often considered trivial, whereas the effects are very fatal and often go unnoticed. One of them affects male fertility, especially the number of sperm cells produced.
Latest research has found that sperm count has decreased by an average of 1.2% per year from 1973 to 2018, and scientists note that the problem is getting worse. Now, new research suggests there may be a hidden cause behind this, namely microplastics.
The study published in the journal Toxicological Sciences analyzed postmortem tissue from 23 human testes and 47 castrated pet dog testes. Researchers dissolved the tissue samples and analyzed the remaining plastic. They found that human testes had a microplastic concentration of 330 micrograms per gram of tissue, significantly higher than the microplastic concentration in dogs (123 micrograms per gram of tissue).
The most frequently detected microplastics are polyethylene, which is used in plastic bottles and bags, as well as PVC, which is often found in pipes, wall coatings, and medical equipment.
This is not the first time microplastics have been detected in human testicles. A small study conducted in 2023 found microplastics in six human testicles, as well as in 30 semen samples.
Many researchers are still unaware of the detailed impact of microplastics on fertility. We know that male infertility accounts for about half of all infertility cases.
"In the current stage, we are still in the early stages of understanding the impact of microplastics on male fertility," said Dr. Xiaozhong Yu, one of the research authors and a professor and environmental health specialist at the University of New Mexico. Alex Robles, an infertility specialist at the Columbia University Fertility Center, emphasized that there is no strong evidence that microplastics will disrupt male fertility. He stated that there is a possibility that microplastics can have a direct toxic effect on sperm cells themselves. This effect has been detected in other microplastics, such as bisphenol A (BPA), which can be found in food storage containers, water bottles, and some metal cans."
Although the exact mechanism is still unclear, there is a hypothesis that microplastics can affect fertility by causing physical damage to the blood-testis barrier or by disrupting endocrine function. Microplastics may also carry harmful chemicals that can disrupt hormonal balance, potentially affecting sperm production and quality.
Currently, the cause of the decreasing number of sperm cells in men is still unclear. Several studies have found that the decrease in sperm count occurs with age. There are likely several factors behind the low sperm count, including changes in lifestyle, environmental pollution, and health conditions.
Doctor Robles emphasizes that there are three factors that greatly influence the quantity and quality of sperm in men, and must be considered to avoid fertility problems, namely:1. ObesityObesity can cause hormonal imbalances, which affect the hormones responsible for sperm production.
3. PollutionToxic substances in the environment, such as tobacco, marijuana, and vaping, can cause direct oxidative damage to the sperm cells themselves.3. GeneticsSome men are born with genetic conditions that can have a negative impact on sperm production or quality.
Health conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension, which are prevalent worldwide, can also affect sperm quality. Fertility experts recommend that couples struggling to conceive visit reproductive endocrinologists and infertility specialists to understand the detailed causes of fertility problems in order to intervene effectively.
