Dr. Ina explained that the less frequently diapers are changed, the higher the risk of infection in children. "There is a study, if I'm not mistaken, in Japan, that shows the less often diapers are changed, the higher the risk of infection," added Dr. Ina.
"Dream - The many types of baby diapers available today often make parents postpone changing them. However, delaying diaper changes can increase the risk of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) in children. "There are many types of diapers now, ranging from super dry ones that absorb very well. With the condition of the diaper being dry like this, parents tend to be lazy to change it because they feel the diaper is still clean," said Dr. Ina Zarlina, Pediatric Specialist, quoted from Liputan6.com."
"Dr. Ina recommends that children's diapers be changed every four hours, even if the diaper still appears dry. "So it is advised that if the child is still fully using the diaper, it should be changed every four hours even though it seems still dry. Because there may be contamination in girls, especially because their urinary tract is shorter compared to boys," added Dr. Ina."
"The Bad Things That Can Arise From Rarely Changing Diapers"
"The infections that can arise from rarely changing diapers are lower urinary tract infections, or cystitis. Dr. Ina explains that Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) occur when bacteria multiply in the urinary tract, causing inflammation in the tissue. UTIs are divided into upper urinary tract infections (pyelonephritis) and lower urinary tract infections (cystitis)."
"Lower urinary tract infections only involve the bladder and its symptoms include increased frequency of urination, pain, and discomfort during urination."
"Although urinary tract infections are common in infants and children under three years old, the symptoms often resemble those of other diseases, making them difficult to detect. Urine culture testing is the primary method for accurately diagnosing UTIs."
The urine culture examination can only be performed in a laboratory because it requires microscopic analysis. In older children, symptoms such as pain during urination or frequent trips to the toilet can indicate a urinary tract infection (UTI), although urine tests and cultures are still necessary for a definitive diagnosis.
