Dream - Ramadan fasting is believed by Muslims as a righteous act of worship that carries great rewards in the sight of Allah SWT. The virtue of fasting rewards is extremely high and limitless. Therefore, the Prophet Muhammad SAW has reminded his followers to stay away from all forms of disobedience and sins that can diminish the rewards of Ramadan fasting. This is because fasting is not just about refraining from hunger and thirst, but also restraining one's desires and bad behavior.
Because there are many things that can unknowingly ruin the rewards of fasting. Many Muslims fast, but still commit sins and disobedience. If this happens, of course, we will only experience thirst and hunger while fasting without receiving any rewards. This is as explained in the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW as follows: "How many people fast but they do not get anything from their fasting except hunger and thirst." (HR. Thabrani)
Then what are the things that can ruin the reward of fasting? Let's directly look at the following explanation! In a hadith from Anas radhiyallahu 'anhu, it is mentioned that there are 5 things that can ruin the reward of fasting. Prophet Muhammad SAW said: "There are 5 things that invalidate the reward of a fasting person, namely (1) lying; (2) backbiting; (3) causing discord; (4) making false oaths; (5) looking with desire." (HR. Dailami) However, besides these five things, there are still other things that can ruin the reward of fasting in Ramadan. What are they? Let's find out below!
Saying something that is not in accordance with reality is known as a lie. If we look at it from the perspective of actions, a person who lies tends to act contrary to their words. Lying is considered a major sin in Islam, which is the root of many other sinful acts. A person who is caught in a lie will tend to build another lie to cover up the first one. Therefore, if someone lies while fasting, the value of their worship becomes empty in the eyes of Allah SWT.
Although gossip is not considered a lie, talking about the faults of others is a reprehensible behavior condemned by Islam. The comparison is made between someone who enjoys gossiping or searching for the mistakes of others and someone who eats the flesh of their deceased sibling, as mentioned in Surah Al-Hujurat verse 12. If a Muslim engages in gossip while fasting, they will only feel hunger and thirst, without receiving any reward for their fasting.
The behavior of instigating conflict and spreading slander stems from a sense of hatred. Instigating conflict can arise from discomfort in seeing the unity of others, which is then followed by spreading slander to create divisions among them. Even in Islam, the consequences for those who engage in instigating conflict do not only result in the loss of the rewards of fasting, but also threaten with punishment in the afterlife.
Allah said in the Quran, in Surah Ali Imran verse 77: "Indeed, those who exchange their covenant with Allah and their oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allah will not speak to them or look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them. They will have a painful punishment." (Ali Imran [3]: 77)
If someone lets their desires run wild while fasting, then the reward of their fast will disappear, and all that will remain is hunger and thirst. One of the main triggers of desire is the gaze of the eyes. If someone lets their gaze go unchecked, and does not guard their gaze towards the opposite sex who are not their mahram, then their act of fasting will be tainted. Therefore, a Muslim must be careful in controlling their gaze.
Wasting time on activities that do not provide benefits, such as watching non-educational television programs or playing games all day, is also an action that can diminish the rewards of fasting and harm someone's fasting rewards.
Expressing rough words that contradict religious teachings can also damage the rewards of someone's fasting. If someone who is fasting is unable to control their emotions and utters rough words to others, it will hurt their feelings and cause sin. Therefore, Islam emphasizes the importance of guarding one's speech.
Other factors that can diminish the rewards of fasting are having ill intentions while fasting or fasting with insincere intentions, such as doing it only to show off to others or because of following tradition. If someone continues to do this, then their fasting will be in vain and their acts of worship will also be worthless. Therefore, it is important to have good and sincere intentions in the heart so that the act of fasting can be carried out properly and gain the pleasure of Allah SWT.
"Committing heinous acts against others or violating laws that are contrary to religious teachings can also damage the rewards of fasting in Ramadan."
