Dream - Until now, scientists have been pessimistic that there were no ancient communities living in the Amazon rainforest. However, an archaeological team made a surprising discovery within the world's largest rainforest.
"Lost Valley Filled with Mysterious City"
They have discovered a 'lost valley' containing mysterious cities that were built thousands of years ago. A large network of ancient cities that have been lost for thousands of years has been found in the Amazon using laser technology. Archaeologists mapping the Upano region in eastern Ecuador have discovered a group of interconnected mysterious cities.
"Sudah Ada Jalan dan Kanal" translates to "There are already roads and canals" in English.
The cities were connected by a network of roads and canals that were considered very 'sophisticated' in their time. Research shows that these cities emerged between 1,500 and 3,000 years ago before suddenly disappearing.
"Population of 10 Thousand People"
The researchers, who first reported this finding in the journal Science on Thursday, estimated that the cities were inhabited by at least 10,000 people. The population of the lost cities in the Amazon valley is equivalent to that of England during the Roman Empire era. "This is a lost city valley, truly extraordinary," said Professor Stéphen Rostain, director of investigation at the National Scientific Research Center, France.
"Possible Causes of the Mysterious Destruction of the City"
Although it is not known exactly why the ancient civilization disappeared, the location of this site provides clues.
This site is apparently located beneath a volcano, which may have caused the destruction of the city and its inhabitants. However, research has also found evidence of threats from foreign residents to the cities inhabited by the Upano people between 500 BC and 300 to 600 AD.
"Parit Sebagai Alat Pertahanan" translates to "Ditch as a Defense Tool" in English.
Some ditches that block the entrance to the city indicate that these cities are used as defenses against threats from foreign populations around them.
Professor Rostain, who led this research, first discovered evidence of the ancient settlement three decades ago. However, at that time Professor Rostein 'was not sure how all the hidden cities in the valley could be interconnected'.
Initially, this archaeologist was reminded not to investigate the area because it was believed that there were no ancient civilizations that ever inhabited the Amazon forest. The problem is, until now, ancient cities have only been found in the highlands of South America, including Machu Picchu in Peru. Previous researchers believed that only a small number of nomadic people lived in the Amazon until Christopher Columbus reached America in the 15th century.
However, Professor Rostein claims that this new discovery truly changes our understanding of ancient civilization in the region.
Professor Rostain claims that these cities are older than other sites in the Amazon. Archaeologist Dr. Antoine Dorison, one of the authors of the study, adds that this finding changes the way we view Amazonian culture. It turns out that ancient Amazonian society lived in large huts and cleared land. This indicates that they lived in a complex urban society.
"Complicated City Underground"
The following is the translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "The archaeologists conducted soil excavation at the site, but they also used laser sensors operated from an aircraft to conduct a survey covering an area of 116 square miles."
This technology, known as LiDAR, can detect the remnants of a city hidden beneath dense vegetation.
The translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any HTML tags is as follows: "The result revealed that there are 6,000 square platforms measuring approximately 20 meters by 10 meters and two to three meters high. These platforms are arranged in groups of three to six and surround a plaza. Researchers believe that some of these 6,000 platforms are houses, while others are used for ceremonial purposes."
Apart from the platforms, archaeologists have also discovered straight roads and wide paths. The network was used to connect many of these platforms. One of them stretches for 16 miles.
"The road network is very advanced. This road network stretches over a very long distance, all interconnected. And this road has precise angles, which is very impressive," added Dorison.
"Own Bridges and Drainage Systems"
The researchers also found that the site was surrounded by agricultural fields and that the surrounding roads were equipped with bridges and ditches dug on both sides, which they believed to be drainage channels used to manage water in the area.
Hole, hearth, jar, burning seeds, and grinding stone are among the objects found on the platform. However, little is still known about the people who live in the mysterious cities in the lost valley.
