"Dream - Limited ability to see does not mean incapability. That spirit was shown by 30 visually impaired students participating in a science class with the theme of fun learning with nature. The event, organized by Mitra Netra Foundation in collaboration with NLR Indonesia, Liliane Fonds, and the Chemistry Education Study Program of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, State University of Jakarta, was held at Kuntum Farmfield, Sindangrasa, Bogor, West Java on Saturday, November 11, 2023. "The purpose of organizing "The Science Outing Class" for visually impaired students is to provide understanding and raise awareness of how important it is for all of us to learn and understand Natural Sciences," said Aria Indrawati, Head of Public Relations at Mitra Netra."
Aria explained that visually impaired students lack sufficient knowledge of science with maximum exposure. Visually impaired students in Special Needs School (SLB) do not receive subjects with maximum exposure because their academic portion is far below the academic level of regular schools.
The following is the translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: The almost similar condition is experienced by visually impaired students in regular schools who often have a limited understanding of science subjects because educators lack understanding of how to adapt teaching methods for students who are unable to see or have poor vision. In this science class event, young lecturers along with future science teachers act as instructors and facilitators during the practical session. Meanwhile, the tutors and instructors from Mitra Netra act as companions.
Before the practical session, students are introduced to various flora and fauna by touching objects assisted by a narrative description from the teacher. In the practical session, students participate in various chemical reaction experiments according to their educational level. The sense of smell, touch, and hearing become tools while participating in the practical session.
Some of the experiments conducted are the chemical reaction of baking soda mixed with vinegar which produces gas. To prove the existence of gas, students put a balloon in the mouth of the bottle. Another experiment is the propagation of sound waves using various strings.
"For visually impaired junior high school students, participants conducted an experiment to make solid soap from coffee grounds. In the second session, students learned about the viscosity process to study the chemical reaction of mixing flour with water."
Practicum is more complex carried out by blind high school students with experiments on colligative properties in the process of making ice cream. Students also participate in practicum to differentiate electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions.
Campaign We Ring The Bell
In addition to the science laboratory activities, this event is also used to voice the We Ruing the Bella campaign, which aims to raise public awareness of the importance of fulfilling the rights of children with disabilities, including the visually impaired. This campaign is carried out by making sounds such as whistles, small bells, followed by the signing of a white cloth as a commitment to support the fulfillment of the rights of children with disabilities.
Performed every year, this campaign will continue to advocate for all visually impaired children in Indonesia to attend school, and visually impaired children without intellectual disabilities to receive education in regular schools. By attending regular schools, the academic development of visually impaired children will be maximized, making them more prepared to continue their education in higher education institutions. The collaboration between Mitra Netra and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Jakarta State University has been ongoing since 2021. This is part of Mitra Netra's efforts to contribute to building an inclusive education system in Indonesia.
