Dream - Scientists for the first time successfully recorded a video of an ancient mammal that is considered extinct. The mammal, which reproduces by laying eggs, has a unique name taken from the famous biologist, Sir David Attenborough.

The appearance of this extremely rare creature proves that the mammal is not extinct as feared. The mammal was found after an expedition led by the University of Oxford explored the Cycloop Mountains in the Papua Province.

"Sacred Mountain"

Local residents in Papua call the sacred mountains that stretch for 36 kilometers by the name of Mount Dobonsolo or Mount Dafonsoro.

Using a trap camera, scientists successfully captured an image of a mammal called the echidna Attenborough for three seconds. Echidna Attenborough has physical characteristics of spiky skin similar to a hedgehog. However, its mouth resembles a duck's beak.

Because of its existence, which was once considered extinct, this echidna Attenborough is given the nickname 'living fossil'. This mammal is believed to have appeared around 200 million years ago, during the time when dinosaurs inhabited the Earth.

Until this discovery, the only evidence of the existence of echidnas was a species called Zaglossus attenboroughi. However, this species is merely a specimen of an animal that died decades ago and is preserved in a museum.

"I am very happy, the whole team is very happy," said Dr. James Kempton when seeing Attenborough's echidna on the trap camera footage. This biologist from the University of Oxford said that Sir David was very pleased after learning about the rediscovery of Attenborough's echidna in Indonesia. Dr. Kempton led a multinational team on a month-long expedition exploring previously untouched areas in the Cyclops Mountains."

The mountains located in Jayapura Regency and City have rainforest habitats at an altitude of 2,000 meters above sea level. In addition to the presumed extinct Attenborough echidna, this expedition also discovered new species of insects and frogs.

They also observe the population of tree kangaroos and birds of paradise, which are in good and stable condition.

Apart from the duck-billed platypus, Attenborough's echidna is the only mammal that lays eggs. Out of the four species of echidna, three of them have long beaks, namely Attenborough's echidna and the western echidna, which are considered endangered.

"Not Including Protected Animals in Indonesia"

For those who have never met an echidna, they would think this creature is a hedgehog. However, the species is very different. Echidnas eat their food using their toothless beak. Another unique thing about echidnas is that males have four branches. Unfortunately, according to Dr. Kempton, the long-beaked echidna Attenborough is currently not included in the protected species in Indonesia.
