The archaeologists say they have uncovered the identity of the human remains in the ancient Greek royal tomb, which is "one of the most historically significant skeletons" in Europe.
"In a study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, a skeleton was found that is believed to belong to the father, half-brother, and son of Alexander the Great, the ruler of the Kingdom of Macedonia from 336 BC until his death in 323 BC."
"During his leadership, this legendary figure led an epic military campaign, creating one of the largest empires in history that stretched from Greece to northwest India. Known as an undefeated commander on the battlefield, he is recognized as one of the most successful and accomplished military leaders in history."
"The Mystery of the Macedonian Royal Tomb is Unveiled."
In a recent study, researchers investigated the remains of a skeleton found in the "Great Tumulus," part of the extensive Aegae cemetery in Vergina, northern Greece. The "Great Tumulus" is one of four groups of royal Macedonian tombs in Aegae, hidden beneath tumuli—mounds of earth and stone that cover the graves.
"In the Great Tumulus, there are three key tombs, known as Tombs I, II, and III, believed to date back to the late 4th century BC. Nevertheless, the identities of the occupants of each of these tombs have been the subject of long debate among scholars, adding to the mystery surrounding the first city of ancient Macedonia, Aegae."
The findings from this excavation helped Vergina become a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The royal tomb beneath the Great Tumulus was excavated in the 1970s, and archaeologists later proposed that the tomb contained the burial of Macedonian nobility, namely, the father of Alexander the Great (Philip II), his son (Alexander IV), and his half-brother (Arrhidaeus Philip III).
The result is that the researchers concluded that Tomb II belongs to King Arrhidaeus and his wife Adea Eurydice. Finally, the researchers found no evidence to contradict the widely accepted view that Tomb III belongs to Alexander IV. “This conclusion refutes the traditional speculation that Tomb II belongs to Philip II,” wrote the authors.
"Considering their conclusion that Tomb II belongs to Arrhidaeus, not Philip II, the researchers argue that several items found within it, such as armor, once belonged to Alexander the Great."
“The identity of its inhabitants will have a significant impact on the interpretation of its contents. For example, because of the ancient depictions and descriptions, some experts argue that several items in Tomb II, such as armor, belonged to Alexander the Great. Great, this can only happen if this is the Tomb of Arrhidaeus, not the Tomb of Philip II,” wrote the authors.”
