Dream - Many things can invalidate someone's ablution, whether intentionally or unintentionally. In that condition, a Muslim will perform ablution again in order to purify their body. Among the many things that can invalidate ablution, you may have heard of someone who has to perform ablution again because they touched their genital area. The question is, does that act invalidate someone's ablution?
Wudhu is a ritual to purify oneself from minor impurities before a Muslim performs prayer or other religious activities. If someone's wudhu is invalidated, then it is certain that their prayer is not valid. A person may find themselves in a vulnerable situation that invalidates their wudhu due to minor or even major impurities. This is why a purification ritual is necessary to cleanse oneself in preparation for worshiping Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala.
Genitals are considered a vital part that should not be touched inappropriately. In our culture, it is taboo to touch genitals, especially in front of many people. So what if you touch your genitals after performing ablution (wudhu)? Does it invalidate the ablution? Specifically, there is actually no evidence in the Quran that touching genitals can invalidate ablution.
However, the genitals are a part of the body that should not be touched, especially when preparing to face Allah SWT. Of course, this is not a respectful action. To clarify this doubt, let us try to examine whether there are any hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad SAW that discuss this issue.

The majority of scholars, such as Imam Malik, Imam Shafi'i, and Imam Ahmad, state that touching the genitalia directly with the hand without any barrier can invalidate ablution.
The reference that serves as the basis of the majority of those scholars is the following hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW): من مس ذكره فليتوضأ
Meanwhile, there is another opinion that states that touching the genitals does not invalidate ablution. The group that expresses this opinion is from the Abu Hanifah School of Thought. The difference between these two opinions arises due to differences in interpretation of several hadiths that seem to have conflicting meanings.
In the book Bidayatul Mujtahid, Ibn Rushd states: وسبب اختلافهم في ذلك أن فيه حديثين متعارضين which means: "And the reason for their difference (the scholars) in this matter is the existence of two conflicting hadiths..."
The hadith referred to by Ibn Rushd is one of them comes from the narration of Tholq bin Ali where there was someone who visited the Prophet Muhammad SAW and then asked, "I have touched my private part or someone else has touched their private part during prayer, is it necessary for them to perform ablution?" The Prophet answered, "Your private part is part of you." (Narrated by Ahmad, Sheikh Shu'aib Al-Arnauth said this hadith is hasan)
After being traced, several scholars interpret that touching the genitals does not automatically invalidate ablution. However, there are steps that need to be taken, namely washing hands after touching the genitals. This action will enhance the purity of the ablution that has been performed.
In Majmu 'Fatawa, Sheikhul Islam Ibn Taimiyah explained about this issue. The stronger opinion is that performing ablution (wudhu) when touching the genitals is recommended (sunnah) and not obligatory (wajib). This is affirmed by one of the opinions of Imam Ahmad. This opinion has compromised various evidence, so the evidence stating the command is intended as recommended (sunnah) and there is no need for abrogation in the Hadith of the Prophet, "Isn't that genitals a part of you?"
However, it should also be known that Sheikh Muhammad bin Salih Al Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) stated that touching the genitals without sexual desire is recommended to perform ablution. If it is done with sexual desire, then it is obligatory to perform ablution. And Allah knows best.
