"A fossil discovered by a pair of hikers last year. It turns out to be a skull of a large prehistoric fish species that lived about 72 million years ago."
The climbers discovered the fossil in February 2023 while walking through the North Saskatchewan River Valley in Edmonton, Canada. Initially, they thought the fossil might represent a piece of dinosaur skin. However, they later took it to paleontologist Phil Currie at the University of Alberta (UA), who confirmed that it was a part of an ancient fish.
"Currie then gave the fossil to fish paleontologist UA Alison Murray and her colleague, who identified it as an ancient sturgeon fish previously unknown."
"This new species was described in a study published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology named Boreiosturion labyrinthicus."
The translation of "Penemuan Tengkorak Ikan Raksasa." to English is "Discovery of Giant Fish Skull."
According to researchers, the fish skull found by the climbers likely represents an individual that was at least six and a half feet long when alive. Sturgeon are a group of fish in North America and Eurasia that inhabit freshwater environments, including rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal waters. These fish are long-lived, and some species can grow quite large, typically reaching lengths of about 7-12 feet.
Sturgeon fish have existed since the time of the dinosaurs. The direct ancestors of this fish can be traced back to more than 200 million years ago.
The body shape of the sturgeon fish is almost similar to that of a shark and also has a sucker mouth at the bottom. This fish has relatively undergone little change since the Cretaceous period, which lasted about 145-66 million years ago. In fact, they are often informally referred to as "living fossils." As far as researchers know, this new species has many similarities with modern sturgeon fish.
“They are one of the largest bony fish we have today and have been around since dinosaurs walked the earth. They almost look like dinosaurs, because they have a very large size and very large scales on their backs that make them look somewhat fierce.”
"said Luke Nelson, one of the authors of the study, in his press release."
